The property combines casino gaming with thoroughbred horse racing in a scenic, riverside setting that feels worlds away from the city. With a full hotel, multiple dining options, and both indoor and outdoor pools, it's set up for overnight stays or extended visits.

However, if you're looking for a high-energy casino atmosphere and an extensive slots selection, this might not hit the mark.

Mountaineer sits at 1420 Mountaineer Circle in New Cumberland, WV, right on the Ohio River with some really nice views. It's about 40 minutes from Pittsburgh, with easy access from Pittsburgh International Airport or nearby highways. The drive out here is pretty relaxing, taking you through countryside that makes the trip feel less like a commute and more like an actual getaway.

Parking is straightforward and spacious. They've got room for RVs and trailers too, though they don't offer hook-ups. Getting around the property is easy with free shuttles or just walking between areas. The riverside location gives the whole place a peaceful, laid-back feel compared to more urban casinos.

The casino floor covers over 66,000 square feet with a classic, no-frills racino setup. You've got the bright lights and constant slot machine sounds you'd expect, plus energy from the table games and nearby racetrack. The space is roomy enough that you can wander without feeling cramped, and the layout flows well between different gaming areas and the sportsbook.

The bed was comfortable and the bathrooms functional. Everything was spotless during my stay. The decor was clean and sleek but quite bland and a bit dated in places. There's nothing particularly memorable about the design, just standard hotel furnishings without much personality. That said, there were no issues with smells or maintenance problems, and for the convenience of being right on the property with easy access to the casino and track, it works well as a straightforward overnight spot.

That said, if you're looking for a high-energy casino atmosphere with tons of people and excitement, this probably isn't your spot. It is quieter and more quaint, especially during the week. The slots selection is also somewhat limited compared to larger properties, so if variety is important to you, that might be disappointing. The weekday hours (8 AM to 4 AM) can also be inconvenient if you like the option of 24-hour gaming.

For a chill escape near Pittsburgh, especially if you love horse racing or appreciate a smoke-free environment, Mountaineer is worth the trip. Just set your expectations accordingly for a more low-key experience.
