Nova Scotia's gaming market operates under a managed model, with casino properties owned by the province and day-to-day operations contracted to a single private operator.
The provincial Crown corporation responsible for managing and overseeing all gaming activity in Nova Scotia, including casinos, video lottery terminals and lottery products. The NSGC owns the Casino Nova Scotia brand and properties but does not operate them directly, instead contracting operations to Great Canadian Entertainment.
One of Canada's largest gaming and entertainment companies, Great Canadian Entertainment operates both Casino Nova Scotia properties in Halifax and Sydney under contract to the NSGC. The company manages the day-to-day running of the gaming floors, dining and entertainment at both venues.
Nova Scotia has two licensed casino venues, both operating under the Casino Nova Scotia brand. The larger of the two is located in Halifax, the provincial capital, and serves as the main gaming destination for the province. The second property in Sydney serves Cape Breton Island and the surrounding region.
Casino Nova Scotia Halifax is the province's flagship gaming venue, located on the downtown waterfront at 1983 Upper Water Street. The 34,900-square-foot gaming floor features over 500 slot machines, 23 live table games including blackjack, roulette, baccarat, EZ baccarat, Ultimate Texas Hold'em and craps, and an eight-table poker room open Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm to 2am. A high-limit area offers elevated stakes on blackjack, roulette and baccarat during select hours.
The casino is connected via indoor pedway to the Marriott Halifax Harbourfront Hotel and to Purdy's Wharf and the downtown core, making it well integrated with the city's waterfront district. The 700-seat Bruce Guthro Theatre hosts live music and entertainment throughout the year, and the 3Sixty restaurant and bar serves food and drinks during casino hours. A 550-space parkade is attached to the property.
Casino Nova Scotia Sydney is the smaller of Nova Scotia's two casino properties, located in downtown Sydney at 525 George Street on Cape Breton Island, constructed as an addition to the city's Centre 200 entertainment complex. The 14,950-square-foot gaming floor houses approximately 300 slot machines and electronic table games including blackjack and roulette. Live table games and a small poker room are available on weekends. There are no live table games on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The property features the Nova Scotia Music Hall of Fame within the casino entrance, celebrating the province's musical heritage. Dining is available at the Junction Bar and Grill, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the week. Several hotels are within short walking distance of the casino on Sydney's waterfront.
Nova Scotia's poker offering is concentrated at the Halifax property. Players must be 19 or older to participate.
