Stateline, Nevada is one of the more unlikely casino destinations in the United States: a tiny strip of four casino resorts sitting precisely on the California-Nevada state line at the south shore of Lake Tahoe, where commercial gambling is illegal on the California side and fully legal fifty feet away in Nevada. It’s here where you will find Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.
The Sierra Nevada mountains rise directly behind the buildings, Lake Tahoe stretches ahead, and Heavenly Mountain Resort, one of the most significant ski destinations in the West with 4,800 skiable acres and 28 lifts, sits 2.5 miles away. The south shore area also offers lake swimming and beach access, water sports, hiking, and year-round sunshine averaging 300 days annually. It is a setting that most casino properties would struggle to improve on regardless of budget.
Harrah's Lake Tahoe is the more quietly accomplished of the two Caesars Entertainment properties on the strip, and has been since Bill Harrah opened his showroom here in 1959 with comedian Red Skelton as the opening act.
It was Harrah who brought genuine entertainment ambition to the South Shore, treating Tahoe as a destination worthy of top-tier performers at a time when most saw it as a regional market. That instinct has carried through eight decades. In 1973 the 18-story hotel tower opened and earned the first five-star diamond rating in casino history. Every one of the 512 rooms was built with two complete bathrooms, a design feature so useful that it remains a signature of the property today.
It connects to the adjacent Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe via an underground tunnel beneath Highway 50, and the combined campus of over 1,250 rooms and two casino floors makes it one of the more genuinely integrated resort experiences in Nevada outside Las Vegas.
Harrah's sits directly alongside Caesars Republic on the Stateline strip, connected to it by an underground pedestrian tunnel. From Sacramento it's around two hours east on US-50. From San Francisco it's approximately three and a half hours. From Reno-Tahoe International Airport it's about an hour south, and an express bus runs between the airport and the Stateline casinos.
Las Vegas is around seven hours by road, but flying is definitely recommended, especially with so many flights connecting the two.
Regional seasonal shuttles connect South Lake Tahoe to the casino strip during both winter and summer seasons. Parking is available on site at a daily charge, but that does include a valet service. They claim the valet service is ‘free,’ but I am not falling for the marketing. If you are paying for parking you are not getting a free valet service included – you are paying for valet parking. Anyway…
The 65,000 square foot casino floor is open 24 hours, and Nevada's full Class III gaming operates here rather than the restrictions of California. That means conventional slots, real dice craps, roulette, and the complete table game range.
The tunnel to Caesars Republic next door gives guests of both properties access to a combined casino environment, which functionally makes them the largest gaming destination on the South Shore when considered together. For regular visitors to Las Vegas, think of it like the connecting walkway between Horseshoe and Paris.
Since it is Nevada, smoking is permitted on the casino floor. There are designated non-smoking areas available, though. I know, it’s not going to change any time soon, but as a non-smoker I still find it frustrating that it’s not the smokers who are forced to move to do what they want to do.
Harrah’s Lake Tahoe has 116 live dealer tables that cover all the major games. That’s a lot, and maybe even a few too many for my tastes. The games include:
Harrah’s Lake Tahoe also has a high-limit area that serves larger-stake players. I wasn’t brave enough to play in there, though. Fair play to those who have the budget to do so. There is a Caesars Race and Sportsbook on site too which is quite nice and, I would say, a mid-tier standard.
825 slot machines make Harrah's the more slot-heavy of the two Caesars properties in Stateline. That does give players a little more choice and variety, but in all honesty it could still be a lot better.
Slots players like me would probably do better to consider Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe to be one big combined casino, like the Venetian and Palazzo in Vegas. It would still only bring the slots count to around 1400, but still.
For those who enjoy it, bar-top gaming is available at Brew Brothers on the casino floor. Just be advised, though, it’s a red light/green light system for comp drinks from the bar when you do. Don’t expect to put a dollar into the bar-top gaming terminal and drink for free all night. Ah the glory days.
If you are not already a member of Caesars Rewards, make sure it’s the first thing you do when you arrive at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Caesars Rewards is one of the most comprehensive casino rewards clubs in the world, and it can save you a tonne of money if you are a regular gambling tourist.
Points earned at either property through the tunnel connection count toward the same tier structure, as do every other Caesars property in the US (yes, including Las Vegas) running from Gold through Platinum, Diamond, Diamond Plus, and Diamond Elite.
Benefits include complimentary stays, dining credits, priority check-in, and Diamond Lounge access.
The 512 rooms are probably the property's most distinctive feature. Every single room is suite-sized at 525 square feet or larger, and every room has two complete bathrooms, one with a shower and one with a bathtub.
This double-bathroom configuration was Bill Harrah's original design when the hotel opened in 1973 and remains one of the most practically useful room features at any casino hotel in Nevada. For families, groups of friends, or any two guests who want to get ready simultaneously without negotiation, it is a design that still rewards its guests five decades later.
The rooms at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe have been designed very well indeed. Angled bay windows in every room are oriented to maximize views of either the lake or the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the upper floors deliver lake panoramas that are among the best in the region.
Double soundproofed walls and blackout curtains keep the rooms quiet and dark too regardless of what time you return from the casino floor.
Sometimes, it genuinely feels like the accommodations at casino resorts are a bit of a lazy afterthought. Actually, sometimes it downright feels like designers are trying to force you out of your room and into the casino downstairs. Harrah’s, though, really shines in the rooms department.
Harrah’s Lake Tahoe has a good range of dining options. It is definitely a mid-tier kind of deal, though, with one main exception.
| Restaurant | Type | General Price |
|---|---|---|
| Friday's Station Steak and Seafood Grill | Fine dining on the 18th floor, panoramic lake views, 1,000-bottle wine cellar, certified Angus and USDA Choice beef, ocean-fresh seafood | $$$ |
| Sapori Italian Kitchen | 18th floor, housemade pastas, tableside tiramisu, pizza, Carano family recipes, Sierra Nevada mountain views | $$ |
| Brew Brothers | Craft brewery on casino floor, casual American, wings, burgers, sandwiches | $$ |
| Tahoe Italian Kitchen | Pizza, calzones, pasta, food court level | $ |
| Fatburger | Fresh never-frozen burgers, food court | $ |
| American River Café | Breakfast daily, casual dining | $ |
Friday's Station is, without question, the dining centerpiece. The 18th floor location gives every table a view across Lake Tahoe, and the 1,000-bottle wine cellar alongside a well-executed steak and seafood menu makes it one of the genuinely strong fine dining options on the South Shore.
Sapori next door, with its tableside tiramisu and Carano family-rooted Italian recipes, is a warmer, more personal option than typical hotel Italian restaurants tend to be.
The indoor pool is heated and open year-round, which is a meaningful practical advantage in a destination that sees significant winter snowfall. It’s nothing special, but it’s a lot better than having a seasonable pool you can’t access during the winter.
On the other hand, of course, Harrah’s lacks that outdoor sunbathing option in summer. I am not that much of a pool person, though, so I offer no preference. Make up your own mind about which is more important to you.
Reflections Spa draws on global wellness traditions, offering Roman baths, Turkish steam, Finnish saunas, Swedish massage, and holistic skin treatments in a full-service environment that is among the more comprehensive on the South Shore. I did manage to try a couple of the treatments and they were excellent. I would recommend it without a doubt.
The South Shore Room is an 800-seat showroom with a long history of major performers across genres from rock through comedy and country. The intimate venue size relative to the calibre of acts it attracts is its consistent strength: seeing a headliner who normally plays 5,000-seat venues in an 800-seat room produces a notably close and personal experience. The calendar runs year-round with the summer season bringing the heaviest programme.
PEEK Nightclub covers the late-night entertainment gap with 6,700 square feet of space, bottle service, go-go dancers, and resident DJs.
Harrah's Lake Tahoe is the more refined of the two Caesars Entertainment properties on the Stateline strip and rewards guests who look past the louder renovation story happening next door at Caesars Republic.
The 512 suite-sized rooms with double bathrooms represent genuinely exceptional value for the space, Friday's Station on the 18th floor is as good a view as any restaurant in Nevada provides, and the Reflections Spa and year-round indoor pool make it a complete resort experience across all four seasons.
