Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe Review for April 2026

Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe, which was formerly known as Harvey’s, is one of four casinos in the stunning Lake Tahoe. Before getting into what the former Harvey's is and what it's becoming, though, it's worth understanding where it sits.

Stateline, Nevada is a tiny census-designated place right on the California border along US-50 at the south shore of Lake Tahoe. It’s home to a strip of four casino resorts that exist precisely because commercial gambling is illegal in California. The Sierra Nevada mountains rise directly behind the buildings, one of the clearest and deepest alpine lakes in the world stretches ahead, and the whole setting is as dramatic as any casino geography in the country.

Harvey Gross opened his original property here in 1944, a gas station with three slot machines that grew into the Wagon Wheel Hotel and Casino and eventually into the largest casino resort on the South Shore. It made national headlines in August 1980 when an extortionist named John Birges, who had lost over a million dollars gambling in Stateline, planted a homemade bomb in the building.

The resulting detonation ripped through five floors and left a crater three stories deep. No one was injured. Birges went to prison for life. The casino was rebuilt and carried on for another four decades as one of Lake Tahoe's most recognisable landmarks.

In July 2025, after 81 years as Harvey's, the property became Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe. At the time of writing, a $200 million renovation is in progress through mid-2026, touching every corner of the resort. It is staying open throughout the transformation. What it is becoming is a modern alpine resort with the Caesars brand, the Lake Tahoe setting, and a dining line-up that already includes Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen and WOLF by Vanderpump.

Getting There

From Sacramento the drive is around two hours east on US-50, which brings you directly to the casino's front door. From San Francisco it's around three and a half hours. From Reno-Tahoe International Airport it's about an hour south. Las Vegas is approximately seven hours by road.

An express bus runs between the Stateline casinos and Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and regional shuttles connect the South Lake Tahoe area to the Stateline strip during both ski and summer seasons.

Casino Review

The 88,000 square foot casino floor is open 24 hours and is Nevada's standard full Class III operation. That means real dice craps, ball-and-wheel roulette, conventional slots, the full range. The renovation is refreshing all tables, chairs, pit stands, carpeting, lighting, and ceiling treatment across the floor in phases, with completed sections opening to a noticeably more contemporary look than what previously existed.

Smoking is permitted on the casino floor as is standard in Nevada, with designated non-smoking areas available. I must admit I don’t like the set-up, but I also accept there is no real sign of it changing any time soon.

The casino connects via an underground pedestrian tunnel beneath Highway 50 to Harrah's Lake Tahoe next door, giving guests of either property access to both casinos' gaming floors, dining, and amenities without stepping outside. This tunnel is one of the more practically useful features of both properties and is worth knowing about before you arrive. For those familiar with Caesars properties in Las Vegas, it would be largely comparable to the walkway between Paris and Horseshoe.

Table Games

116 live tables cover the full range of games here, as you would expect from a brand like Caesars. They include:

The poker room runs daily and weekly tournaments and is receiving a new high-limit configuration as part of the renovation. There is also a racebook and sportsbook offering wagering on sports and horse racing.

Slots

There are around 600 slot machines on the casino floor, which feels a little low to me. Personally I’d prefer more slots and fewer tables since many of the tables were not in operation when I was there. I say that as, full disclosure, a slots player, so perhaps I am not the most objective judge in this regard.

The selection is okay, but limited by the number. In some places that really shows, but I am hopeful that as the refresh rolls out, so will a better choice of slots.

Rewards Club

Caesars Rewards is one of the most established loyalty programmes in the industry, covering properties across the full Caesars Entertainment group. That is significant.

Points earned at Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe count across every Caesars property, including Harrah's Lake Tahoe next door through the tunnel, making the combined campus effectively one rewards earning environment. Tier levels run from Gold through Platinum, Diamond, Diamond Plus, and Diamond Elite, with escalating benefits including complimentary hotel stays, priority check-in, free valet, dining credits, and access to the Caesars Diamond Lounges at applicable properties.

Caesars is a programme that pretty much any serious gambler should have already enrolled in really. Along with MGM Rewards, it is the card that gets you the biggest bang for your buck on the comps trail.

Did You Know?

Lake Tahoe sits on the border of California and Nevada, and that state line has defined its entire casino history. Because commercial gambling is illegal in California, every casino at Tahoe sits on the Nevada side — in some cases, just inches over the line. The Cal-Neva Lodge at Crystal Bay, which opened in 1926, famously had the state line painted straight across its floor, with gambling tables on the Nevada side and a dance floor on the California side. Frank Sinatra co-owned the Cal-Neva in the early 1960s alongside Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana, a connection that eventually cost Sinatra his Nevada gaming licence.

Hotel Review

The 742 rooms and suites occupy two towers: the Lake Tower and the slightly smaller Mountain Tower. The Lake Tower rooms are over 525 square feet and carry the lake and mountain views that make this property's upper-floor accommodations among the most scenic in Nevada outside Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, the Mountain Tower rooms are around 370 square feet, more compact but more affordable. The Lake Tower renovation is underway as part of the wider project, with rooms being progressively refreshed to a contemporary alpine aesthetic.

Rooms

Lake-facing rooms on upper floors offer views across the water and into the mountains that are genuinely difficult to put a price on, particularly at sunrise and sunset when the light on the water and the Sierra Nevada peaks is exceptional. Mountain Tower rooms trade the lake for the mountain range directly behind the property, and they really struggle to measure up.

Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, coffee makers, blackout curtains, free WiFi, and in-room safes.

What you can say about Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe is the two towers give a meaningful price spread: the Mountain Tower is the more budget-conscious option while the Lake Tower delivers the full premium experience.

Where to Eat

Caesars always know how to put on a spread, and they have used their various partnerships to give the old Harvey’s a big upgrade on the dining front. Here is a round-up and some highlights.

RestaurantTypeGeneral Price
Gordon Ramsay Hell's KitchenSignature casual fine dining, contemporary California-influenced dishes$$$
WOLF by VanderpumpLisa Vanderpump's upscale American restaurant, awarded Diners Choice$$
The Sage RoomHistoric steakhouse, one of Tahoe's oldest restaurant institutions$$
19 Kitchen-BarContemporary American, bar setting$
Brew BrothersCraft brewery and casual dining on casino floor$
CinnabonQuick bites, pastries$

The Sage Room is worth particular attention. It is one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in Lake Tahoe and its retention within the re-branded property's dining lineup is a meaningful nod to the property's history alongside the new celebrity chef arrivals.

Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen and WOLF by Vanderpump bring recognizable names to the property via existing partnership that Caesars enjoy. I haven’t eaten at Hell’s Kitchen in Lake Tahoe, but I have at the Caesars Palace one in Las Vegas and, although pricey, it was worth the cost just for the sticky toffee pudding alone.

The renovation is also introducing Tessie's Cocktails and Chords, a new bar and lounge on the casino floor inspired by the mythical creature said to inhabit the depths of Lake Tahoe, adding a playful local character element to the property's social spaces.

Pool and Spa

The outdoor pool is seasonal, with the alpine setting giving it a genuinely appealing backdrop when open. Phase Two of the renovation, slated for summer 2026 completion, is upgrading the pool experience, so stay tuned on that front.

A full-service health club and spa are available to hotel guests. I wasn’t able to try it, but it seemed a very mid-range spa judging by the price point and treatment line-ups. That is not a criticism, though. Sometimes, in my experiences, spas at casino resorts can go so fancy they are actually harder to relax in. You know, like not wanting to take off your shoes at your Nana’s house.

Entertainment

The Lake Tahoe Amphitheater at Caesars Republic is the outdoor concert venue formerly known as the Harvey’s Outdoor Amphitheater, and it is one of the most scenic concert settings in the western United States.

With Lake Tahoe visible behind the stage and the mountains surrounding the venue, the backdrop for a summer evening show is exceptional. The venue has hosted Rod Stewart, Dave Matthews Band, Earth Wind and Fire, and a long roster of touring acts as part of the Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series.

It is the primary entertainment draw for the property and the calendar is worth checking well in advance as summer shows regularly sell out.

Meanwhile, the Cabaret at Caesars Republic handles smaller indoor entertainment during the off-season.

Verdict

Caesars Republic Lake Tahoe is in genuine transition and will be a different property by mid-2026 from what it is at the time of writing. I look forward to checking in with it again once the renovations are complete.

However, the bones are already strong: the largest casino floor in Stateline, 742 rooms with some of the best lake views in Nevada, a legendary outdoor concert venue, and now two celebrity-chef restaurants added to the historic Sage Room. The renovation is modernizing a property that had genuinely aged and the early results are encouraging.

Visiting during the renovation period means accepting that some areas will be in varying states of completion. Visiting after mid-2026 will give a clearer picture of the finished property. Either way, the Lake Tahoe setting, the summer concert series, and the underground tunnel connection to Harrah's next door make it a compelling choice on the South Shore.
