Betway Goes Live in Alberta's Regulated iGaming Market

Betway has gone live with its sportsbook and online casino in Alberta's regulated iGaming market.

The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), the Crown corporation that oversees the market, confirmed the launch in a social media post on Sept. 28, welcoming Betway Alberta alongside newly registered Golden Tiger Casino Alberta.

AiGC's own directory of licensed operators listed 34 registered iGaming sites as of Tuesday.

That is up from 22 sites on July 13, when Alberta's regulated market first opened.

AiGC's directory also lists PowerPlay Alberta, an Ontario-licensed sportsbook and casino brand, as a live regulated operator in Alberta.

The addition extends PowerPlay's regulated footprint to a second Canadian province, alongside Betway and Golden Tiger Casino.

A Third Super Group Brand Comes Ashore

Betway is one of five Alberta-registered platforms owned by parent company Super Group.

The others are Jackpot City Alberta, Royal Vegas Alberta, Ruby Fortune Alberta and Spin.

Royal Vegas and Ruby Fortune had already appeared on AiGC's registry in the weeks before Betway, while Jackpot City and Spin had not yet launched as of Tuesday.

Alberta becomes Betway's second regulated Canadian market after Ontario, where the brand has operated since that province's iGaming launch in 2022.

A Deadline Is Pushing Grey-Market Operators to Convert

Betway's move comes as operators that were already active in Alberta's unregulated grey market face a hard deadline to convert or leave.

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) required grey-market brands to end unregulated activity by the July 13 launch date, but it offered a case-by-case extension of up to three months.

That grace period expires Oct. 13, when any operator still unlicensed must either complete its transition or stop taking Alberta bets altogether.

"We are approaching the rollout in a disciplined and phased manner to support sustainable long-term growth," Super Group CEO Neal Menashe told investors.

Menashe made the comment on the company's Aug. 5 earnings call, weeks after Alberta's iGaming market opened.

Apollo's Golden Tiger Joins a Crowded Field

Golden Tiger Casino, which launched alongside Betway, is one of seven Alberta-registered brands owned by Malta-based Apollo Entertainment.

As of mid-July, none of Apollo's seven Alberta brands, including Captain Cooks Casino and Grand Mondial Casino, had gone live in the province.

Alberta's minister responsible for iGaming, Dale Nally, said in May at SBC Summit Canada that he had heard estimates of as many as 70 operators wanting to enter the province's market.

With the Oct. 13 deadline days away, more grey-market brands are expected to complete their transition to Alberta's regulated iGaming market in the coming weeks.
