When Gameburger Studios and Microgaming released the 9 Masks of Fire slot in 2019, it is hard to imagine they could foresee the impact that it has had. The Scatter Collection mechanic, while not quite up there with Cascading Reels or "Book of..." slot games, has become increasingly popular since its launch, and Pragmatic Play has been back to that well once again with the Cash Chips slot. This retro-themed title attempts to mix the old with the new, but does it succeed? Let’s find out in this Cash Chips slot review.

The Cash Chips slot game is all about rolling back the years and providing players with a retro slot experience. The background to the slot appears to be some sort of old-fashioned orange and red disco hall, while the symbols are populated with symbols you would expect to find on an old-school fruit machine. These include a fiery number 7, an upside-down horse-shoe, a pair of cherries, and, of course, a bell. All of this is complemented by some funky, old-fashioned slot sounds that help bring it all to life.
It’s a genre that is extremely popular, so there is nothing strikingly original about the design, but the graphics and color palette are strong, making it feel modern despite its retro leanings.
The Cash Chips slot’s uncomplicated design lends itself really nicely to mobile gaming. Players can pick up and enjoy the Cash Chips mobile slot when they are out and about, with the game being fully optimized to work on Android and iOS operating systems, as well as being supported on top mobile casino apps.
The base game of Cash Chips keeps things simple. The slot uses a five-by-three grid with 20 fixed paylines on each spin. Winning combinations are formed when you land three or more matching symbols on a line, starting on the leftmost reel.
The stake is adjusted by clicking on the +/- buttons found on either side of the spin icon. The minimum stake is $0.20, and the maximum is $240, though this may vary depending on the casino you are playing at. There is also an autospin feature that can be activated directly under the spin button.
As we mentioned in the opening to this Cash Chips slot review, the game uses the Scatter Collection feature that was made popular by 9 Masks of Fire. Pragmatic Play has used this in the past, most notably in the Lobster Bob’s Crab Shack slot. In this instance, the Scatters are replaced by the titular Chips. When you land four or more Chips, you will be paid out according to the meter on the right-hand side of the reels.
Players get paid 5x when they land four Chips anywhere on the reels. Each additional chip adds more to the prize, with 5,000x being paid out if you land nine.
Landing three or more Scatters across the middle three reels will trigger the Cash Chips Free Spins bonus. When the round is launched, players can choose if they want to play Free Spins with Extra Wilds or Extra Chips. If they opt for Wilds, then a wheel spins that will determine a random number of Wilds, which will be added to the board, as well as a multiplier of up to 5x. If they opt for the Chips option, then up to 100 extra Chips can be added.
Players can also buy their way into the Free Spins round for 100x their stake. This will depend on their location.
The Cash Chips slot has a math model that Pragmatic Play has rolled out time and time again, and that is similar to what you might find in a slot like Big Bass Bonanza. The game serves up a maximum win of 10,000x your stake while having an RTP of 96.03% and a 5/5 volatility rating.
Cash Chips is a solid slot that does a good job of mixing the old with the new. The Scatter Collection mechanic is becoming increasingly common, and this is the first time it has been used effectively in combination with a retro theme. The selection of free spins, while not groundbreaking, adds a different element to the standard free spins round and gives you some control over the way it is played. The math model is standard Pragmatic Play stuff, with the 10,000x maximum win being strong. Overall, this is an engaging slot that is worth taking for a spin at our selected online casinos, especially if you like retro-themed titles and want one with a little more innovation.
