When I first shared the news that I’d been selected as a Casinos.com poker ambassador and would be playing in the World Series of Poker later this year, the excitement was immediate. But right alongside that excitement came a very real realization: I had a lot to learn.
Anyone who knows me knows that I play slots. I appreciate the balance between entertainment and strategy that other slot players recognize.
Poker, however, is a completely different environment.
Over the past several weeks, I’ve been diving into that world as I prepare for the WSOP, and the experience has been humbling.
Like many people, I thought I had a solid understanding of poker. I loosely understood hand rankings, I’d played casually with family, and dabbled with three card poker at land-based casinos. But when I began seriously studying the game, it quickly became clear that knowing the rules is just the starting point.
Concepts like hand ranges, position strategy and tournament structures opened up an entirely new layer of complexity. Poker is a game of math, psychology, timing, and patience, often all at once.
It feels like I’m learning a new language.
One thing that surprised me was how many lessons from the slot world actually apply to poker. Understanding volatility and staying emotionally steady during swings are essential in long-term play.
Same with Poker. You can make the correct decision and still lose a hand, just like you can play a high-RTP slot responsibly and still experience a cold streak.
Learning to stay disciplined and avoid emotional decisions during those moments is key. That mindset has been one of the most valuable tools I’ve carried with me into my poker preparation.
Preparing for the WSOP has meant spending a lot more time studying poker strategy than I ever expected.
One concept that stood out immediately was the importance of table position. In slots, every spin is independent. In poker, where you sit relative to the dealer dramatically changes how you should approach each hand.
Once that clicked, it changed how I think about the flow of a game.
Another highlight of this journey has been getting to know more people in the poker community.
Poker players are passionate about the strategy behind the game, and many are surprisingly generous when it comes to sharing insights.
Conversations about tournament dynamics, bluffing spots, and chip stack management have given me a deeper appreciation for how layered the game really is.
That openness has made stepping into the poker world much more welcoming.
As the World Series of Poker approaches, my preparation continues to evolve. I’m focusing on tournament strategy and continuing to study the fundamentals that strong players rely on.
Just as important, though, is remembering to enjoy the opportunity.
The WSOP is one of the most iconic events in gaming, and getting the chance to participate as a Casinos.com ambassador is something I’m incredibly grateful for.
What this experience has reminded me most is how valuable it is to step outside your comfort zone.
Slots will always be where I started and where I feel most comfortable. But learning poker has opened up a new side of casino gaming that I’m excited to continue exploring.
I’m still very much a student of the game, and that’s okay. Every hand and every conversation with players adds another piece to the puzzle.
When I finally take my seat at a WSOP table, I know I’ll still have plenty to learn. But I’ll also be ready for the challenge, and excited for whatever the experience brings next.
