Fremont Hotel and Casino is one of seven casino resorts along the famous Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas.
Operating since 1956, Fremont Casino has been part of the Boyd Gaming group since the mid 1980’s alongside their other downtown properties Main Street Station and The California.
Although Fremont Hotel and Casino has been around for a long time, it doesn’t seem to get the same recognition as many of its competitors. It doesn’t have the heritage of Golden Gate, the sensational amenities of Golden Nugget or the theming of El Cortez. For many years, it has just kind of blended in.
But that wasn’t always the case and isn’t necessarily the case now after a recent $50million expansion and refurbishment.
So, what are the good and bad things about playing and staying at Fremont Hotel and Casino? Let’s take a look.
Fremont Hotel and Casino opened on May 18, 1956, part-owned by renowned casino figure Ed Levinson. Levinson was a well-known underworld criminal who made his name in illegal gambling in Michigan and Kentucky before trying to make it legally in Vegas. Well, to an extent.
He was connected to a number of different Vegas casino resorts including Sands Hotel, The Dunes, Flamingo, Binions (known then as Binions Horseshoe) and The Riveria. But his main investment was in Fremont Hotel and Casino.
Fremont was meant to be the first refined hotel in Downtown Las Vegas. Levinson partnered with Lou Lurie, a San Francisco financier who had experience with hotels in Miami and brought in Chef Shillig, formerly of the Ritz Hotel in Paris and the Savoy in London.
With a 15 story hotel tower standing 177 feet tall, Fremont Hotel and Casino was the tallest building in the state of Nevada for six years. Levinson, together with his Food and Beverage Manager Ed Torres, persuaded high-class entertainers such as
Wayne Newton, Kay Starr, and Pat Boone to draw the crowds.
It was all going so well for Levinson, until the FBI planted bugs in his Fremont office which led to allegations that he and some of his shady associates were skimming profits from the casino.
Even after Levinson left Fremont, the casino continued to be under investigation for skimming on and off for several years. Eventually the Nevada Gaming Commission asked Sam Boyd from Boyd Gaming to take over operations in the mid 1980’s.
Sam Boyd had come through the ranks from dealer, pit boss to casino owner and he, together with his son Bill already owned The California as well as other successful casino resorts. They had a reputation for doing everything by the books so took over the running of Fremont for a few years before officially acquiring it in 1985.
The company continues to be ran by the Boyd family today led by Sam's granddaughter, Marianne Boyd-Johnson.
One of Boyd Gaming’s key marketing tactics was to specifically target Hawaiian tourists. He himself had grown up in Hawaii and knew the culture as well as the demand for gambling with it being illegal in state. He offered vacation packages, chartered flights and cornered the market, rebranding The California Hotel and Casino to a Hawaiian theme.
Both Main Street Station Hotel and Casino and Fremont Hotel and Casino benefit from this Boyd Gaming association. Although neither have any Hawaiian branding, they do cater to a high proportion of Hawaiian clientele for that reason.
The Fremont Hotel and Casino is situated on 200 Fremont right in the heart of downtown Las Vegas.
The casino is located on what is commonly referred to as the ‘four corners’ where Casino Center Boulevard and Fremont Street meet. On each of the four corners is a big casino resort, these are - The Fremont, Four Queens, Golden Nugget, and Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel.
Most Fremont street businesses, including Fremont Hotel and Casino are considered part of The Fremont Street Experience.
A popular tourist attraction, The Fremont Street Experience (FSE), is a long street covered by the worlds largest LED digital display. Along the street you will find seven casinos, bars, nightly live music, street entertainers and spectacular shows on the Viva Vision canopy. Not to mention the SlotZilla Zip Line.
Other close-by attractions include the Mob Museum, Container Park and Neon Museum which are all less than 15 minutes on foot.
If you want to explore the Las Vegas Strip, there are plenty of taxi and rideshare options available or you can choose to take the Deuce bus. The Deuce picks up at the far end of Fremont Street and runs 24/7 travelling the full length of the Strip stopping at all the big casino resorts on the way.
It is a really cheap transport option and you can buy single trip, one day or three day passes to hop on and off as often as you like. Be warned though, because it has so many stops, it’s not a quick journey.
If you are travelling from Harry Reid International Airport to Fremont Hotel then unfortunately, the fixed rate taxi fee doesn’t apply to downtown properties, so you can expect to pay up to $30 - $40 for the journey.
For guests arriving by car complimentary valet parking is available for hotel guests.
The Fremont has some of the most spectacular neon that you will see in Las Vegas. The exterior sign and fascia is awash with red, white and gold neon lights that give the property a real wow factor from the outside in a classic Vegas kind of way.
Once inside, that wow factor doesn’t necessarily follow, although I don’t mean that in a negative way. The interior just looks like many other casino resorts with low ceilings, patterned carpets and slot games as far as the eye can see.
What is clear is that Fremont casino has recently been renovated. In October 2023 it unveiled a renovated entrance, refreshed casino, a new FanDuel Sportsbook and a food court expansion.
Everything looked fairly new and clean on my visit. The carpet was new, the white pillars were freshly painted and some parts of the casino had bright feature lighting making it feel bigger and lighter.
The casino floor is 32,000 square feet, which is average for a downtown casino. The table games are in the center of the casino with slots arranged all around the outside. My overall first impression was that Fremont casino was a well-maintained, busy casino with lots of games to explore.
There were around 22 live table games when I visited offering mostly blackjack with some roulette, craps and poker pit games too.
Table games are available 24/7, but how many tables are open depends on demand. On the day I visited both 3:2 and 6:5 blackjack were on offer, with the latter starting at a $5 minimum bet.
The games on offer include:
If you prefer to play electronic table games instead, then there was a small selection of single player and multi-player blackjack, roulette and craps games with a $3 starting bet.
There’s around 1000 slots to choose from at Fremont Hotel and Casino. With everything including mechanical three reel machines, a good range of video poker and some of the most modern video games too, you won’t be short on choice.
The slots closest to the food court seemed to be spaced out well with lots of playing room. However, the slots at the other side of the casino and either side of the table games are a little more cozy when it comes to elbow room.
Some of the most popular games you can find at Fremont Casino include:
I played Huff n’ More Puff Power 4 and got one small bonus but did a little better on Lighting Link Eyes of Fortune and walked out about $50 up.
You can play bar-top games in all three bars at Fremont Hotel and Casino. The casino bar, the Fanduel sportsbook bar and the Filament Bar all have bar-top terminals for players to enjoy.
Terminals usually offer a small selection of games including Video Poker, blackjack, and some slots, although each one can differ. To play, just find an empty chair, put in some money and choose your game.
You will get complimentary drinks as you play at Fremont, and your bartender will let you know when you’ve qualified for a drink. As long as you keep on playing and spending, the drinks will follow, just remember to tip your server.
Fremont’s FanDuel Sportsbook is a cool place to go if you’re into watching and betting on sports.
Opened as part of the 2023 development, the Fremont sportsbook has two sections. On the left side there’s a bar with bar-top gaming machines, tables, chairs, and TVs to watch the games. The other side is all about betting with a handful of tables, a betting counter, and a handful of kiosks.
Despite FanDuel branding the sportsbook, at the time of the writing, the sportsbook is still operated by Boyd Gaming. That means you can bet on all major sports, although Boyd aren’t known for offering great odds, so just bear that in mind.
I called in the sportsbook for a quick drink to check it out and it had a nice atmosphere. I do think it would benefit from some more comfortable seating though.
Waitress service is available at Fremont casino as with all Las Vegas casino resorts. When you’re gambling, whether at the table or on the slots, you will see waitresses circulating the casino floor offering drinks.
This is a complimentary drinks service, however, it is customary to tip, so make sure you leave between $1 - $5 per drink depending on what you order. If you don’t tip, the likelihood is that you won’t get offered any more drinks.
You can ask for beer, spirits, soft drinks, wine and cocktails, if you’re not sure what to ask for, just ask your waitress what they have.
Personally, I’ve always found the waitress service at Fremont to be a little inconsistent. The casino has a sprawling rectangular shape and no matter where I play I never seem to see a lot of waitresses passing by. Maybe I’ve been a bit unlucky with that but I never seem to have that issue elsewhere.
I didn’t see a designated High Limit gaming area within Fremont Hotel and Casino, but sometimes it is just a small selection of high denomination slots on the casino floor.
Always check the denominations and bet levels available before you sit down to play. I’ve been stung a few times playing 10c denomination when I thought I was playing 1c denom. If the lowest denomination is 10c or higher then the minimum stake is probably around $5 and it would be classed as high limit.
You will need cash if you want to gamble in Fremont casino, card payments are not accepted for casino games.
You can insert cash straight into slot games and hand cash to your dealer at the tables in exchange for chips.
Slot machines do not pay out in cash though, instead, you’ll receive a voucher which acts as casino currency. You can then continue playing by inserting that into another slot or cash it out at one of the redemption machines. At Fremont casino, the redemption machines are in the center beside the table games.
At the tables, you take your chips and cash them out at the cashier cage.
If you need to get cash out on the casino floor, then ATM’s are available at Fremont casino. Just be aware that casino cash machines usually charge an increased withdrawal fee.
Fremont Hotel has around 440 rooms and it is considered a value property in Las Vegas. Although conveniently located for all Downtown attractions, Fremont is just one of 12 casino resorts in a very compact area so competition is high.
The most basic room at Fremont – the Deluxe King – is one of the smallest you will find anywhere in Vegas at just 240 square feet. Guests should not expect spacious rooms with extravagant finishes or features, but instead, rooms that are clean, comfortable and reasonably priced.
I booked a Premium Room with two double beds with is slightly larger at 350 square feet than the Deluxe Rooms options. The corridor leading to my room was a little dark and plain, but the room was light enough when I entered.
I would describe the décor as a little uninspiring and bland, but to be truthful, it was just very similar to what you might find at any other similar property. The furniture was light wood, there was some artwork on the walls and the carpet was beige and stripey. It was all perfectly acceptable and nice enough.
As well as bedside tables, there was a fitted double wardrobe, a desk and chair and some drawers. There wasn’t any comfortable lounge chairs or a coffee table which I thought was unusual.
The bathroom was exceptionally small, with a shower, toilet and a tiny sink but it came with complimentary toiletries and it was very clean and well-presented.
Other amenities included hair dryer, iron/ironing board, safe, TV, a personal mini refrigerator and a coffee maker offering two complimentary coffees each day.
I wouldn’t say I’m in any big hurry to go back and stay at Fremont Hotel, but what I would say is that the bed was comfortable and if I did need to stay somewhere downtown, I wouldn’t have a problem staying there again.
There are three main bar areas at Fremont Hotel and Casino.
The casino bar, called imaginatively The Bar, is just like every other casino bar in downtown Las Vegas. It’s casual, lively, sociable and you can play bar-top games while soaking up the atmosphere. The FanDuel sportsbook bar is just about the same but with more of a sports focus.
The Filament Bar is the newest bar in Fremont Casino and it’s situated towards the rear entrance of the casino just off Fremont Street. Its location means it attracts quite a lot of footfall from the Fremont Street Experience so it can get busy.
The bar combines an upscale modern décor and boasts the longest pewter bar top in the world. It serves a range of cocktails, alcoholic slushies and when I was there it had $3 Corona on the menu too, which worked for me.
There’s also TV screens showing sport and some bar-top games so all-in-all its just a really cool place to hang out for a while. Especially if you want to rest your feet after walking Fremont Street.
Since the Fremont Food Hall opened, there are now plenty of places to get a bite to eat. Without naming all of the vendors, the food hall contains options such as Huey Magoo’s, Steak ‘N Shake, Craft Kitchen and Dunkin’ Donuts.
I have eaten at both Huey Magoo’s and Craft Kitchen and would highly recommend both. Huey Magoo’s does a meal deal and the chicken tenders just fall apart, and the pancakes I got at Craft Kitchen were divine. I’d happily eat at both again.
Outside of the food court, Tony Roma’s is the most famous Fremont Casino restaurant.
Although a nationwide chain, the Tony Roma’s restaurant at Fremont Hotel and Casino is the only one in Las Vegas so it can get very busy. Serving its award-winning baby back ribs plus all of its other menu favourites, Tony Roma’s offers a casual dining environment but with lots of quality food.
Fremont Hotel and Casino also offers another quick eat option in the form of Lanai Express. Serving a wide selection of Chinese and American dishes including their famous $2.99 shrimp cocktail, you can grab your food at the counter and go, or sit at one of the casual tables.
Although Fremont Hotel and Casino gave Mr Las Vegas himself, Wayne Newton, his big breakthrough, it no longer hosts entertainment shows.
However, for all Fremont Street casinos, the Fremont Street Experience is the main entertainment anyway.
With live music on three stages every night, half hour Viva Vision shows, the Slotzilla Zip Line, as well as a variety of colourful street entertainers, FSE is a party place every single night. A word of warning though, it is not really suitable for children’s eyes so be wary of that.
Other close-by attractions include the Mob Museum, Container Park and the Neon Museum.
Fremont Hotel and Casino does not have a pool complex. However, hotel guests can use the rooftop pool at sister property California over the road. Open daily 8am until 8pm during the pool season, guests just need to show their room key to gain access.
Considering there isn't even a pool, you won't be surprised to discover there isn't a spa either at Fremont. It's just not that kind of place.
The big advantage of Boyd Rewards is that because all Boyd casinos offer the same program, it is possible to earn and redeem points at all 27 properties which are located across ten different states.
You have to be 21 or over to join Boyd Rewards and you can join easily by taking photographic ID to the rewards desks in any Boyd casino.
Once signed up, you can earn Boyd Points and Tier Credits by using or showing your Boyd Rewards card whenever you gamble. Simply slide it into the machine when you play slots, or hand it to your dealer at the tables and ask for your play to be rated.
The more Tier Points you earn, the higher you will climb the status tiers and the more rewards you will receive as below:

With regard to Tier Credits - $5 on the slots and keno will award one Tier Credit while you can also pick up credits by playing table games and video poker but this varies depending on stake level, type of game and time played.
When it comes to claiming rewards, 1000 Boyd Points will earn $1 in FastPlay or towards retail spend.
Boyd Gaming doesn’t have any resorts on the Las Vegas Strip so if you want to gamble there you can’t pick up points when you do. However, Boyd has lots of casinos downtown and off Strip, as well as in other locations to make it a really worthwhile rewards program.
It’s always worth joining the rewards program before you spend any money in the casino, it can get you on the casino’s radar for promotions and deals and you never know what offers can follow.
Fremont Hotel and Casino doesn’t have the name recognition of many of its competitors, however that doesn’t mean it doesn’t match up. In fact, Boyd Gaming have invested and modernized the property as recently as 2023, giving it a fresh appeal.
On top of its comprehensive gambling options for both table games and slots players, it also has great food and bar offerings too. Although the rooms aren’t going to win awards for size or décor, they are clean, comfortable and really affordable, especially if you want to be right in the thick of the Fremont Street action.
Fremont Hotel and Casino is therefore, in my opinion, a cracking downtown Las Vegas resort. It’s convenient, well-maintained, well-run and offers just enough of everything to give you an enjoyable stay and gambling experience.
