Wind Creek Wetumpka is the largest casino resort in Alabama, and the numbers back that up without any need for qualification. The 85,000 square foot gaming floor is bigger than its sister properties in Atmore and Montgomery, and the 20-story, 283-room hotel overlooks the Coosa River from a position of domineering authority.
There is also a Fire Steakhouse on site, the same award-winning steakhouse brand as Wind Creek Atmore's, and the AAA Four Diamond rating applies here too.
At the center of the casino floor sits a 16,000 gallon shark tank, one of the more unexpected features of any casino I’ve ever been to. Wetumpka itself is a small city about 12 miles northeast of Montgomery on Highway 231, and the casino has transformed both the local economy and the wider region's understanding of what a tribal casino resort can be.
Let's take a much closer look.
From Montgomery the drive is about 12 miles northeast on Highway 231 and takes roughly 20 minutes. From Birmingham it's about an hour and twenty minutes south. From Atlanta you're looking at around two and a half hours west on I-85. The Coosa River setting makes the approach to the property genuinely scenic from all directions though, particularly as the 20-story hotel tower comes into view on the river bank.
The 85,000 square foot gaming floor is open 24 hours and houses more than 2,500 gaming machines, making it the largest casino floor in Alabama.
Like Atmore and Montgomery, though, Wind Creek Wetumpka operates exclusively Class II electronic bingo machines under federal Indian gaming law. Alabama's constitution prohibits Class III gaming, which means there are no conventional slot machines. It also means there are no table games, so no blackjack, no poker, no roulette, and no craps.
The machines look and function like slots, but they operate on a bingo-based mechanism rather than the usual random number generator. The real question though is whether you will notice any actual difference when it comes to playing them? The answer is no, at least I didn’t. It’s the same games but with different math mechanics, and it’s not like we ever see the maths mathing under the hood anyway.
What sets the Wetumpka floor apart physically, beyond its sheer size, is the centerpiece shark tank. A 16,000-gallon tank sits at the heart of the casino floor, housing live sharks, and it creates a visual focal point unlike anything you'll find at any other casino in the region. It has become something of a signature of the property, the kind of detail that people mention when they've been there and that makes the floor memorable in a way that pure machine numbers alone can't.
Both smoking and non-smoking gaming areas are provided with clear separation, and the floor's high ceilings and ventilation system manage the air quality well. A Center Bar sits on the floor where promotions run regularly and sports coverage plays on large screens.
As mentioned, Wind Creek Wetumpka, like all casinos in Alabama, are prohibited from having table games as they do not permit Class III gaming.
Wind Creek Wetumpka has more than 2,500 machines, with popular titles including Huff N Puff and Buffalo among them. In fact, nearly all the most popular titles and providers are well represented on the casino floor.
If you are looking for something a bit more adrenaline-spiking, the high-limit room provides a more intimate setting for larger stake play.
Wind Creek Rewards works the same way here as across the rest of the Wind Creek properties, with points earned on the floor converting to dining credits, hotel stays, prize draws, and event access through the app.
What makes Wetumpka stand out within the programme, though, is the scale of its promotions calendar. As the flagship Alabama property it tends to run the most ambitious giveaways of the three, and a recent Porsche Cayenne draw gives you a sense of the ambition. If you're going to join Wind Creek Rewards for the first time, Wetumpka is probably the best place to do it.
The 20-story hotel towers over the Coosa River and carries the same AAA Four Diamond rating as the Atmore property, which is a great starting point. With 283 rooms it is also the largest of the three Alabama Wind Creek hotels, and the river-facing rooms offer views that are genuinely hard to beat for a casino hotel in this part of the country.
Rooms are done and maintained to Four Diamond standard with premium bedding, large HD TVs, free WiFi, and modern bathrooms. There is no doubt, though, that balcony rooms with river views are the ones to request. I did, and I got lucky. I am assuming it would be harder at weekends, though.
The hotel does not permit pets but welcomes ADA service animals.
Wind Creek Wetumpka's dining options are pretty good in truth, and very extensive. Here is a summary.
| Restaurant | Type | General Price |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Steakhouse | Fine dining, prime beef, fresh seafood, Alabama's #1 rated steakhouse | $$$ |
| Riverside Marketplace | Food court style, multiple cuisines, casual all-day dining | $ |
| Riverside Breakfast Café | Breakfast focused, morning dining | $ |
| Sweet Sensations | Desserts, sweet treats | $ |
| Starbucks | Coffee, pastries | $ |
| Pool Bar (seasonal) | Poolside drinks and light food | $ |
| In-Room Dining | Extended menu, delivered to your room | $ |
Fire Steakhouse carries the same reputation at Wetumpka as at Atmore, rated the number one steakhouse in Alabama and the fine dining anchor of the property. Prime cuts, fresh seafood, and the kind of kitchen consistency that earned the rating make it a destination dinner rather than a casual option.
I tried it at Atmore so skipped it here, but if it’s even half as good as it was there it’s worth a visit.
The Riverside Marketplace handles the food court requirement for guests who want variety without formality (which was me), covering multiple cuisine styles in one space. It was good enough. I mean, how good are food courts ever going to be?
The seasonal pool bar is a good option in warmer months, especially with the river backdrop.
The outdoor pool runs seasonally and offers pool bar service and the Coosa River views that the hotel's upper floors enjoy from a different angle. I didn’t get to experience it during my stay, but it looks nice if you’re a pool type person.
The Spa Reserve at Wind Creek is a full-service spa operation covering massages, facials, body treatments, nail care, and salon services. It was very good and relatively reasonable in price. I’d recommend it.
Meanwhile, for you masochists out there, the fitness center is available 24 hours to hotel guests.
Wind Creek Wetumpka's entertainment offerings are more concentrated on the casino floor and the occasional major promotions event than the dedicated live music venue model of Montgomery or the amphitheater setup at Atmore.
The Center Bar on the casino floor serves as the live entertainment hub, with regular promotion nights, sports viewing, and events tied into the Wind Creek Rewards calendar. The property runs some of the most generous promotions events of the three Alabama properties, including car and luxury vehicle giveaways.
The surrounding Wetumpka area has its own appeal for outdoor visitors too. The Coosa River offers white-water activities and the town has a historic character that makes it a pleasant base for wider exploration of central Alabama. Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson, a historic site nearby, is worth a few hours for anyone with an interest in the region's colonial-era history.
Wind Creek Wetumpka earns its status as Alabama's largest casino resort through a combination of scale, setting, and quality.
The 85,000 square foot floor, the shark tank, the 283-room Four Diamond hotel on the Coosa River, Fire Steakhouse, and a luxurious spa make it the most complete resort package of the three Alabama Wind Creek properties. Meanwhile, the river setting gives it a visual drama that Atmore and Montgomery don't quite match, and for guests who want the full resort stay rather than a day visit, it is the natural first choice among the three.
Is it my favourite of the three? Probably, but only because I think the shark tank is absolutely awesome.
The Class II gaming caveat applies here exactly as it does at Atmore and Montgomery: Gaming machines that play like slots but aren’t slots, and no table games of any kind. For slot players it doesn't matter as you won’t notice any difference. For anyone hoping for a table game floor, Wind Creek Wetumpka, and indeed all of Alabama, cannot deliver and you should either adjust your expectations or plan a different trip.
