Considering the popularity of the genre, slot developers must have a really hard time finding new ways to approach Ancient Egypt slots. Top-tier slot developer Light & Wonder has decided to focus on the Colossi of Memnon, an ancient temple based around two giant statues of Amenhotep, a legendary Pharaoh. It’s a unique proposition, but does it help the game stand out in a very crowded field? I’m going to take it for a spin and find out in this Secrets of Memnon slot review.

The Secrets of Memnon slot from Light & Wonder is pretty generic in terms of design. The game’s reels are positioned inside a temple, presumably modeled on the Colossi of Memnon, while Amenhotep, the legendary pharaoh, stands to the right side of the grid. While the design of Amenhotep is quite striking, the game does little to stand out from other titles in the genre.
Light & Wonder decided that the Secrets of Memnon slot should not have a soundtrack. Instead, some arcade-like sounds play as you spin the reels. I found these a little repetitive and was quickly reaching for the mute button in the settings menu.
The game has a very basic design, which does dampen the experience a little, but it makes up for this with some good winning potential.
The Secrets of Memnon slot has a very basic set-up. The game uses 5 reels and 3 rows, with 10 paylines active on each spin. The game grid can expand by an additional three rows. When this happens, 20 paylines are active.
The set-up of the game is easy to understand. The stake is controlled by clicking the stack of coins icon, while the spin, autospin, and turbo-play options are all underneath. The betting options range from $0.10 to $10.
Secrets of Memnon does follow the classic ‘Book of’ mechanics, with a few minor twists. Notably, the game grid can expand to add three rows, increasing the chances of landing a big win.
I played the Secrets of Memnon slot for real money for a reasonably extended period following a lucky flurry of early wins. I initially set the game to take 50 auto-spins for $1 each in my chosen casino online. Within three spins, I triggered the Free Spins bonus and hit a big Multiplier win thanks to the Expanding Wild and the expanded grid. Over my eight free spins, I totaled up a win worth 67x my stake.
I continued to play through my spins, collecting wins thanks to the Wild feature. While I lost count of the exact number of spins I played, I started with a $50 budget and finished my session sitting at $142.50.
Secrets of Memnon has a reasonably robust math model. The maximum win available in the game is 10,000x your stake, while the RTP comes in at an above-average 96.19%. This doesn't quite make it one of the best RTP slots, but it's still a good payback rate. Light & Wonder has rated the slot as highly volatile, suggesting you should not expect to land regular wins.
Light & Wonder has served up a solid but not spectacular Egyptian-themed slot with Secrets of Memnon. The game has a very basic design, which does dampen the experience a little, but it makes up for this with some good winning potential. While the 10,000x maximum win is not game-changing, it is attractive enough, and the game’s bonus features ensure the action remains engaging throughout.
If you enjoy Secrets of Memnon, I recommend checking out some other Egyptian-themed titles. Of course, Play’n GO’s Book of Dead is a staple of the genre, while Hacksaw Gaming’s Hand of Anubis is a standout title. Light & Wonder is a top developer, and I recommend checking out hits like 88 Fortunes to see what else the club has in store.
