Caribbean Stud Poker Review

Caribbean Stud Poker by Evolution takes the familiar structure of five-card poker and reduces it to a simple head-to-head showdown against a live dealer. Instead of multiple betting rounds, bluffing, and trying to read opponents, you’re dealt a single hand and have one key question to answer: do you play or fold?

Everything happens at a much faster pace, appealing to those who want a poker experience without the drawn-out table shenanigans. Despite the simplicity, each hand still carries plenty of tension as you decide whether your cards are strong enough to win. On top of that, the progressive jackpot adds an extra layer of excitement.

This in-depth review will break down how Caribbean Stud Poker is played, cover key betting strategies, take a closer look at the available side bets, and highlight the best online casinos where you can play for real money. We’ve got plenty to get through, so let’s get cracking.

How to Play Ultimate Texas Hold’em

Caribbean Stud Poker is easy to pick up, even if you’ve never played poker before. The game is played against the dealer, and the goal is simply to make a better five-card hand than the dealer's.

To start each round, you place an Ante bet, which can be between $1 and $3,000. You and the dealer are then dealt five cards each, all face down except for one of the dealer’s cards. There are also some optional side bets, which we’ll cover later in this review.

Once you’ve seen your cards, you have one decision to make: call or fold. If you fold, you lose your Ante bet and sit out the round. If you call, you place an additional bet, usually double your Ante, and continue to the showdown.

Once all decisions have been made, the live dealer reveals their hand. To qualify, they must have at least an Ace-King or better. If they don’t qualify, your Ante is paid even money, and your call is returned. If they do qualify, your hand is compared to theirs. If you win, both bets are paid out according to the following paytable.

Caribbean Stud Poker Features

Caribbean Stud Poker keeps things fairly straightforward, so you won’t find flashy bonus rounds or slot-style features here. What you do get, however, are a couple of optional side bets that add extra payout potential on top of the main game. Below, we’ll take a closer look at how these side bets work.

Caribbean Stud Poker Strategy & Tips

Caribbean Stud Poker may seem complicated, but the strategy is actually quite straightforward once you know what matters. Unlike traditional poker, there’s no bluffing or trying to outsmart others since your main goal is to decide whether your hand is strong enough to beat the dealer.

The basic rule is simple: raise with any pair or better. Hands with Ace-King can also be worth playing in certain situations, especially if the dealer’s visible card is weak. Anything else should be folded. This might feel too cautious to some, but forcing weak hands into play is a sure-fire way to drain your bankroll.

As for the side bets, they’re best treated as occasional means of entertainment. The 5+1 and Progressive Jackpot bets can pay out huge amounts, but they also carry significantly higher house edges of 8.56% and 18.16%, respectively. A small side bet now and then can spice things up, but don't rely on them too heavily.

Caribbean Stud Poker vs Three Card Poker

Three Card Poker is another highly popular poker variant that has some similarities to Caribbean Stud Poker. For instance, both games are played against the dealer rather than other players, use traditional poker hand rankings, and revolve around a simple fold-or-continue decision after receiving your cards.

However, you’ll notice the differences when you start playing. Three Card Poker is faster and easier to learn, with shorter rounds and a simpler strategy. Caribbean Stud Poker takes a more traditional approach with five-card hands, a slightly deeper decision-making process, and the added excitement of a progressive jackpot.

The table below highlights the key differences between these two Evolution games.
