Montana is not a state that does things by halves when it comes to scenery. Driving north from Missoula on US Highway 93, the mountains rise up on either side and the landscape opens out into something genuinely spectacular. About ten miles up the road, perched on top of Evaro Hill, is Gray Wolf Peak Casino, the largest casino in Montana, owned and operated by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.
That context matters. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes historically thrived across a 22 million-acre territory in what is now the western United States and Canada. Following the 1855 Hellgate Treaty, the tribe reserved nearly 1.3 million acres on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and S&K Gaming (the tribe's gaming enterprise) operates Gray Wolf Peak as one of four gaming properties across western Montana. The current casino opened on November 2, 2016, replacing a smaller original facility at a cost of $15.4 million, and it brought something new to the region.
Gray Wolf Peak sits at 20750 US Highway 93 North in Evaro, Montana, roughly 10 miles north of downtown Missoula. From Missoula the drive takes around 10 to 15 minutes, and the casino is easy to find on the highway with clear signage. Missoula Montana Airport is approximately 13 miles away. Free parking is available in a large surface lot on site, which also includes a Conoco gas station for visitors passing through on the highway.
One thing to note: the casino is open daily from 10am to 2am, not 24 hours.
The 34,000-square-foot facility is modern, well-designed, and considerably more polished than you might expect for a casino in a community of this size. The interior is well lit, clean, and welcoming, with a layout that keeps the gaming floor, dining areas, and bar clearly separated. The mountain setting is not incidental to the experience. The views from the surrounding area are genuinely stunning, and the sense of being somewhere beautiful rather than somewhere generic gives Gray Wolf Peak a character that most regional casinos cannot replicate.
The gaming floor is organized into both smoking and non-smoking sections, which is a solution that aims to please all and is reasonable if not entirely practical. I certainly applaud the intent.
One thing to be clear about upfront: Gray Wolf Peak is a slots-only casino. There are no live table games, no poker room, and no traditional sports betting. Montana gaming regulations and the tribal compact structure mean the property operates exclusively on electronic gaming machines. If table games are your priority, Gray Wolf Peak is not the right destination.
With over 300 state-of-the-art gaming machines, Gray Wolf Peak offers a solid selection covering everything from penny machines to larger denomination games and progressive jackpots. The floor is regularly updated with the latest and most popular titles, and the selection includes well-known slots from major manufacturers.
Video keno is also available alongside the slot selection. The machines are maintained to a high standard and the floor staff were incredibly helpful during my visit.
The SKG Premier Rewards program is free to join and earns members points on every gaming session. Points can be converted directly into Xtra Credit on your machine, or redeemed for comps covering food, beverages, retail, hotel stays at other CSKT properties, and more. A notable perk is discounted or free gas at the on-site Conoco gas station. 500 points equates to $1 off fuel, activating once you have at least 2,500 points accumulated. Hot Seat drawings and Hopper drawings add an extra layer of excitement for card-carrying members playing on the floor. New members receive a welcome bonus on joining.
There is no hotel at Gray Wolf Peak Casino. The original facility was built with site work prepared for a future hotel development, but as of 2026 that project has not proceeded. Visitors looking to stay overnight have two options: the casino provides a small free RV park in the parking lot with electric hookups, available on a first-come, first-served basis by checking in at the front desk. For hotel accommodation, the nearest options are in Missoula, roughly 10 to 15 minutes south on Highway 93, with a good range of hotels available at various price points close to the interstate.
Reward Credits through SKG Premier Rewards can be redeemed for hotel stays and cabin accommodation at other CSKT properties including KwaTaqNuk Resort in Polson, which is well worth considering for visitors planning a longer trip to western Montana.
Gray Wolf Peak has a restaurant, a lounge, and a deli-style food bar covering the main dining needs.
| Venue | Cuisine | Price |
| Mountain Pine Grill | American, steaks, seafood, burgers | $$ |
| Waters Lounge | Bar menu, beverages | $ |
| Deli Food Bar | Quick bites, takeout style | $ |
The Mountain Pine Grill is the main dining destination, serving traditional American fare including steaks, seafood, and burgers in a comfortable setting. The standout menu item, and something worth ordering specifically, is the Montana Twinkie: fire-roasted jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese, wrapped in bacon, and topped with a citrus huckleberry sauce. It sounds like a dare and tastes like a revelation.
Waters Lounge handles the bar end of things with cocktails and beverages, keeping the bar separate from the gaming machines, which a number of visitors specifically appreciate. The deli food bar covers quick casual bites for visitors who want something fast without sitting down for a full meal.
There is no pool or spa at Gray Wolf Peak Casino.
Entertainment at Gray Wolf Peak is centred on the gaming floor itself, with regular promotions, drawings, and events running throughout the month. The property also has meeting space available for private events, rehearsal dinners, and business functions, which gives it a community utility beyond just the gaming operation. The setting on Evaro Hill and proximity to some of western Montana's most spectacular outdoor landscapes means the entertainment picture extends well beyond the casino walls. Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, the National Bison Range, and the hiking trails of the Flathead Reservation are all within reasonable reach.
Gray Wolf Peak Casino is a well-run, modern tribal casino that consistently punches above its weight for a property of its scale. The gaming floor is clean, current, and thoughtfully organized across smoking and non-smoking sections. The Mountain Pine Grill serves food that genuinely surprises visitors expecting the usual casino fare, and the SKG Premier Rewards program is solid for regular players. The location on Evaro Hill, with the Rocky Mountains on the horizon and Missoula just down the road, gives the property a sense of place that no amount of interior design budget can manufacture.
The absence of table games, a hotel, and a traditional sportsbook are genuine limitations for visitors expecting a full-service casino resort experience. Gray Wolf Peak is not that, and it does not pretend to be. What it is, is the best gaming experience in Montana in a setting that the state does particularly well. For visitors passing through western Montana on Highway 93, it is a stop well worth making.
