Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino Lake Charles Review for April 2026

Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino Lake Charles is one of the most comprehensively equipped waterfront casino resorts in the American South. The property on the shore of Lake Charles in southwest Louisiana opened on December 7, 2014, and has been the region's luxury destination standard-bearer ever since.

The resort sits about two hours east of Houston, drawing heavily from the Texas market, and the scale of what it offers on arrival tends to surprise visitors expecting a regional casino and finding something considerably closer to a Gulf Coast resort: a two-acre tropical pool complex with a lazy river, an 18-hole championship golf course, a private beach and marina, over a dozen restaurants and bars, and a DraftKings Sportsbook that was, when it opened in 2022, the largest retail sportsbook in Louisiana.

The origin story has a few twists worth knowing. The site was originally acquired by Ameristar Casinos in 2006 under plans for a $350 million project called Sugarcane Bay. Those plans were cancelled in 2010. Pinnacle Entertainment subsequently acquired the gaming licence, and in 2013 Landry's Inc., the Houston-based hospitality group behind the Golden Nugget brand, bought the project from Pinnacle for approximately $600 million and completed it as Golden Nugget Lake Charles.

The result is a property built at scale from the outset rather than expanded piecemeal, and the coherence of the overall design shows.

Getting There

Lake Charles is on the I-10, the main corridor between Houston and New Orleans. From Houston the drive is approximately two hours east. From New Orleans it's around three hours west. From Baton Rouge it's about ninety minutes southwest. Meanwhile, the Lake Charles Municipal Airport is a short drive away and handles regional connections, though most visitors from Texas drive.

That is probably why free valet parking is available at the resort's main entrance. The property is immediately adjacent to L'Auberge Casino Resort, another major Lake Charles property, and the two are connected by a walkway and shuttle service, effectively giving guests access to both properties without needing a car.

Casino Review

The 70,000 square foot casino floor is open 24 hours, and the full range of Class III games is available. That means there are no ‘electronic bingo machines’ here. It’s conventional slots, real dice craps, roulette, blackjack, poker, and the complete table game menu.

Smoking is permitted on the casino floor, with the poker room a designated smoke-free area. That feels like a bit of an odd split to me, but casino smoking policies seemed to jump the logic shark a long time ago.

The DraftKings Sportsbook, which opened in September 2022 as Louisiana's largest retail sportsbook, spans over 12,000 square feet. It has 30 self-service kiosks, lounge seating, LED screens, and a full bar. It sits outside the main casino floor and is one of the more impressive sportsbook setups in the region.

Table Games

With 87 live tables and a dedicated poker room, there's plenty at Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino Lake Charles to keep table players busy. The game line-up includes:

The poker room runs 7 tables in a smoke-free environment with No Limit and Pot Limit Texas Hold'Em, Omaha, and 7 Card Stud. Cash games and monthly tournaments are both available, with Bad Beat jackpot promotions adding an extra incentive for regular players.

Slots

1,600 slot machines cover the floor from penny denominations upward, including the newest releases from major games providers alongside established popular titles. I am more a video-reels kind of person, but there were a lot of the old-school mechanical three-reel slots at Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino Lake Charles too.

The slots areas were good enough but, in truth, looking a little tired in some places. Whether that was due to welcoming a swarm of button-smashers at some point or just natural wear and tear, I can’t say.

Rewards Club

The Golden Nugget 24K Select Club is the one here, and it’s definitely one worth joining. That is largely because Golden Nugget is such a strong brand and has destinations in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, among others too. Therefore, you are likely to find better value here than with most loyalty programmes.

It’s not just Golden Nugget casinos where 24k Select Club can work for you either. It is all Landry’s Inc. locations. That covers 600 locations nationwide, covering chains like Bubba Gump Shrimp, Landry's Seafood, Chart House, and more. For regular visitors to any Landry's dining concept, the cross-redemption is a genuinely valuable benefit.

Did You Know?

When Louisiana legalised casino gambling in 1991, lawmakers insisted every casino had to be on a riverboat — complete with a paddlewheel and a licensed maritime crew — to evoke the romantic image of 19th-century Mississippi steamboats. The only problem was that nobody actually wanted to sail. Casinos quickly discovered that customers headed for the exits the moment a boat looked like it was about to leave the dock. So operators invented increasingly creative reasons to stay moored: too windy, too dark, low-hanging power lines. For nearly three decades, Louisiana's "riverboat" casinos sat permanently docked while still legally required to employ maritime crews and maintain operational paddlewheels. The requirement was finally scrapped in 2018, and the boats quietly moved onto land.

Hotel Review

The 1,040 rooms and suites occupy two towers: the original Gold Tower and the Rush Tower, which opened in May 2017 adding 353 rooms each exceeding 500 square feet. Those names might sound familiar to visitors of other Golden Nugget properties.

Gold Tower rooms sit closer to the casino floor and in the heart of the action. Rush Tower rooms are larger and feature upscale bathrooms with five fixtures including dual sinks, a walk-in shower, and an oversized soaking tub.

Views span the lake, the pool complex, the golf course, and the causeway bridge depending on room orientation.

Rooms

Standard rooms across both towers come with flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, WiFi, and seating areas. Rush Tower rooms feel noticeably more premium with their larger footprint and superior bathroom configuration, though. The trade-off, of course, is they are further from the casino.

Upgraded suites add living areas, wet bars, and in some cases private balconies, grand pianos, or hot tubs.

The lake-facing rooms on upper floors deliver views across the water that put the Louisiana setting front and center, particularly at sunset when the light on the water is at its most striking.

I would definitely say that, in my opinion, the Rush Tower rooms are the ones to go for if you can. There is nothing necessarily wrong with the Gold Tower rooms, but the jump in refinement and finish is definitely noticeable. Still, ultimately, both just provide a place to rest your head so it’s not a big deal either way.

Where to Eat

Landry's Inc.'s restaurant portfolio gives Golden Nugget Lake Charles a dining lineup unusual for a regional casino. It allows branded chains with established reputations to sit alongside the resort's own concepts.

Vic and Anthony's is the fine dining attraction at Golden Nugget Lake Charles. It is a Landry's flagship brand and with good reason given it’s a serious steakhouse. That does mean it also comes with a serious price tag, though.

Chart House at the golf clubhouse is worth a trip in its own right, particularly for the sunset views over the course and the refreshed menu that arrived in late 2024 under Executive Chef Stephen Coblentz. I have no interest in golf, but I tried it out on the recommendation of staff and I wasn't disappointed.

Blue Martini is also worth flagging as Louisiana's first location of the Florida-based cocktail lounge chain. It has live music most evenings and operates as a nightlife destination rather than just another hotel bar.

Pool and Spa

The H2O Pool and Bar is one of the best pool complexes at any casino resort in the South. It also claims to be the largest on the Gulf Coast, and while I can’t verify that claim, it does carry some credibility when you're standing in it.

It boasts a main pool, a lazy river, a waterslide, a swim-up bar with giant TVs, fire pits, private cabanas and daybeds for rent, and a pickleball court. An adults-only section keeps the swim-up bar area calmer than the family-friendly main pool. Poolside food and drink service runs throughout the day.

The Golden Nugget Spa and Salon offers the full range of treatments: massages, facials, body wraps, manicures, pedicures, hair services, and waxing. I didn’t try them myself though so I can’t comment first hand on whether you should.

A full fitness center is also available to hotel guests.

Golf

Let’s get the disclaimer out the way immediately: I am not a golf course expert. It’s not my game or my vibe. What I can tell you though is The Country Club at Golden Nugget is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course designed by Todd Eckenrode and Origins Golf Designs 7,000 yards of manicured Bermuda grass fairways. That’s right, I can read in-room promotional material with the very best of them.

Unlike Fallen Oak at Beau Rivage, this course is open to the public as well as hotel guests, so visitors don't need to stay at the resort to play. The clubhouse has locker rooms, a dedicated pro shop, and the Chart House restaurant I enjoyed with its sunset views over the course and the lake beyond.

Entertainment

Live music runs regularly across the resort's bars and lounges. Now that is a really nice touch. There is something about live music and casinos that just go together beautifully in my opinion.

The Blue Martini anchors the late-night entertainment programme, and the private marina and lakefront beach give the property a really nice fresh dimension. You can take boat excursions on the lake, enjoy watersports, and when added to the beach access it all combines to support the resort's overall reputation as something more than just a place to gamble.

Verdict

Golden Nugget Lake Charles delivers a resort package that consistently exceeds what visitors expect from a Louisiana regional casino. The two-acre pool complex, the 18-hole championship golf course, the private beach and marina, Louisiana's largest DraftKings Sportsbook, Vic and Anthony's steakhouse, and over 1,000 hotel rooms in two towers add up to a comprehensive offering at the scale of something you’d usually expect to find in a Las Vegas property.

The Landry's rewards integration also makes the 24K Select Club one of the more practical loyalty programmes in the casino industry.
