Monarch Casino Resort Spa Review Review for June 2026

Black Hawk, Colorado sits in a narrow canyon about 45 minutes west of Denver, tucked into the Rocky Mountains on Highway 119. It is a small historic mining town with a very large gambling industry with around a dozen casinos lining the main street, competing for the Denver day-tripper market. Monarch Casino Resort Spa is the first property you see when you arrive from Denver, which is either a piece of very deliberate positioning or a very happy accident. Either way, it works.

Monarch Casino & Resort acquired the former Riviera Black Hawk in 2012 and spent the better part of a decade and $400 million transforming it into something considerably more ambitious. The grand opening came in 2022 and the result is the most complete casino resort experience in Black Hawk. It includes a 23-floor tower with 516 hotel rooms, a rooftop spa and pool, four restaurants, and a 60,000-square-foot gaming floor that doubled the size of what was there before. For a mountain casino less than an hour from a major city, the scale of it genuinely surprises first-time visitors.

Getting There

Monarch sits at 488 Main Street in Black Hawk, directly on Highway 119 at the entrance to town from Denver. The drive from downtown Denver takes around 45 minutes in normal traffic, making it one of the most accessible mountain casino destinations in the country. Complimentary valet parking is available at the front entrance, and covered self-parking is also on site. The casino operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Casino Review

The 60,000-square-foot gaming floor is the largest in Black Hawk and among the most polished casino environments in Colorado. The layout is spacious and well organized, with high ceilings, contemporary finishes, and the kind of design investment that signals a property taking its hospitality credentials seriously. Colorado law requires all casinos to be smoke-free indoors, which makes the whole experience considerably more comfortable than many comparable regional properties across state lines.

One thing worth knowing before you visit: Colorado caps individual bets at $100 per wager, which applies across all games on the floor. It is a state-wide rule that surprises first-time visitors from other casino markets and affects the high-stakes experience somewhat, though the dedicated high-limit area makes the most of what the regulations allow.

Table Games

Monarch has 40 live table games covering a solid range of options. On my visit the selection included:

A dedicated high-stakes area serves players who want more privacy and the maximum limits the Colorado $100 cap allows. A live poker room is in development and will add a further dimension to the gaming lineup when it opens.

Slots

With over 1,200 slot and video poker machines across the floor, Monarch has the largest slot selection in Black Hawk by a significant margin. The range covers penny games through to the maximum denomination permitted under Colorado regulations, with a strong mix of classic titles and recently released games. I found all the familiar crowd favorites such as Buffalo Gold, Mo Mummy and Phoenix Link alongside a rotating selection of newer titles that keeps the floor feeling current. The layout gives most areas comfortable breathing room, which is a proper quality of life improvement over some of the more cramped mountain casino environments.

Sportsbook

Monarch operates BetMonarch, its own branded Colorado sports betting app, alongside a dedicated sports lounge on the property. Wagering covers all major professional and college sports with a full range of bet types including live betting, futures, and parlays. The sports lounge provides a comfortable environment for watching multiple games simultaneously.

Rewards Club

Monarch Rewards is the property's loyalty program, free to join on the casino floor. Members earn points through gaming, dining, and hotel stays, redeemable for free play, dining credits, and hotel discounts. The program runs regular promotions and has been recognized for offering some of the more competitive comp rates in the Black Hawk market.

Hotel Review

The 516-room hotel tower is the centerpiece of what makes Monarch different from every other casino in Black Hawk. Spread across 23 floors, the rooms are spacious, immaculately appointed, and feature vaulted ceilings, luxury furnishings, and specialty bath products. Suites, all 106 of them, step things up further with Kohler spa tubs and panoramic Rocky Mountain views that are genuinely spectacular from the upper floors.

The rooftop amenities are a particular draw. Spa Monarch is a full-service luxury spa offering massages, facials, body treatments, a sauna, and steam room. The rooftop indoor pool gives year-round access to one of the more unusual swimming experiences in Colorado - warm water, mountain views, and the novelty of being above the treeline in a casino hotel. The fitness center is also available for hotel guests. A resort fee applies per night, which is standard for Colorado mountain properties of this caliber.

Where to Eat

Monarch has four distinct dining options covering a wide range of appetites and budgets.

RestaurantCuisinePrice
Monarch ChophousePremium steaks, seafood, craft cocktails$$$$
Bistro MariposaElevated Latin cuisine$$$
Twenty-Four 7American classics, Asian fare, open around the clock$$
The BuffetNightly lobster, crab, USDA prime rib, international$$

Monarch Chophouse is the headline act - a four-star steakhouse with a chef-driven menu of premium cuts, fresh seafood, and craft cocktails in an upscale setting that holds its own against Denver's better restaurant options. Bistro Mariposa brings elevated Latin flavors to the lineup with a menu that stands out in a market where steakhouses dominate. Twenty-Four 7 keeps the kitchen running around the clock with comfort food, Asian dishes, and classic American fare which is highly convenient for late-night players who want more than a bag of chips. The Buffet is the nightly event, with a spread that includes whole Maine lobster, snow crab, and USDA prime rib alongside international options that make it a destination in its own right.

Pool and Spa

Spa Monarch on the rooftop is a full luxury facility with treatment rooms, sauna, steam room, relaxation areas, and a full menu of massages and body treatments. The rooftop indoor pool operates year-round and is one of the standout amenities of the entire Black Hawk casino market. Access is available for hotel guests.

Entertainment

Monarch hosts live music and entertainment events throughout the year in its dedicated entertainment spaces, with a program that varies seasonally. The casino floor itself provides the primary entertainment draw, and the combination of dining, spa, and gaming means most guests find the property self-contained enough for a full weekend without needing to look elsewhere.

Verdict

Monarch Casino Resort Spa is the best casino resort in Black Hawk and one of the finest mountain gaming destinations in the United States. The $400 million transformation has delivered exactly what it promised - a luxury hotel tower, an impressive spa, outstanding dining, and a gaming floor large enough to satisfy players of all preferences. The Colorado $100 bet cap is a constraint that applies equally across the market, and the smoke-free environment is a real advantage over competitors in neighboring states.

For Denver residents, it is the most compelling mountain escape available within an hour of the city. For out-of-state visitors making a Colorado trip, it is the casino resort that justifies the detour into the Rockies.
