Regal Riches is one of those strange kinds of slot machines that are probably no one’s favourites, but everyone still plays from time to time. That is to its credit, but let’s see if we can explain it all in a little more depth.
Let’s start off by pointing out that it has a largely unique mechanic. That is quite rare to find on the land based casino floor these days, where the hold and spin, pots, and progressives rule supreme in 2026. IGT has done something different with the Regal Riches slot machine, though, and its sister game Prosperity Pearl. We’ll obviously go into a lot more detail about that shortly.
The other thing to mention straight away about Regal Riches is that it is, away from the UK at least, an advantage play machine. Now, to many, ‘advantage play’ are dirty words these days. If you are unfamiliar with it, it is a style of slot play that targets specifically ‘bonus must hit by’ slot machines, of which Regal Riches is one.
That means it is a game of both opportunity given there is, in theory at least, a degree of judgement to add into the usual unpredictability. However, it also means that you can lock yourself into a game for longer than you probably should, chasing. Remember, the bonus hitting by a certain point is what is guaranteed, not that the bonus will be a good one.
So, let’s have a closer look at the Regal Riches slot machine and fully explain why you should be excited to play it.

I am not entirely sure that I would say Regal Riches has a ‘theme’ as such. Well, it does, but you’d sometimes struggle to notice it. The symbols at least depict a medieval motif, with swords, shields, and crowns. Regal, you might say.
The bigger question, though, is never whether or not a slot machine has a theme, but whether its theme adds anything to the gameplay. In Regal Riches’ case, it doesn’t. If you want proof of that, look no further than the aforementioned Prosperity Pearl, which takes the game and reskins it for exactly the same feel.
The design, on the other hand, is the real attraction of the game. Indeed, if the theme is medieval monarchy, the ‘must bit by’ potential is like a roaming prince showing itself off from a distance, hoping to ensnare some well-connected princess on bravado alone. That’s you in this analogy, by the way, the princess.
There are three bonuses you can hit. They are Minor, Major, and Mega. No minis here. Each has a different bright coloured jewel that glistens at you. It is an effective dynamic to be fair to IGT. In fact, the game is presented quite beautifully, with its color compositions and effective use of screen space. It is undoubtedly a large part of the game’s success.
As, by the way, is the game’s atmosphere. It’s all screeching swords, dramatic thuds, and screen-shaking drama. It definitely feels like it has a sense of self-importance, as you’d expect from a Regal.
Another strength of the Regal Riches slot machine is definitely its simplicity. Well, perhaps simplicity is the wrong term here. I’d perhaps be better off describing it as Intuitivity. I think that’s a word. If it’s not, it should be. Look, I am trying to say it is intuitive, okay?!
By that, I mean it is a very easy game to pick up and play, and within a small number of spins, you just get a feel and understanding of what you are looking for.
It’s played on a 4x5 grid, so there are plenty of paylines to play with, which definitely creates the illusion of potential, certainly if you are more accustomed to the likes of Dragon Link and Lightning Link, which have a smaller grid. In reality, though, many games with a smaller grid offer more paylines at lower denominations.
Then you just start spinning. Pretty soon, you will figure out that you need two bonus symbols (swords) in the first four reels and then a third in reel five that corresponds to a bonus colour (purple for minor, green for major, yellow for mega).
There are also wilds in the natural game, too, and when you see them, you collect them. In fact, that is the entire mechanism of the game. They are gems of different colors, and when you land them, they go to boost the numbers on the glistening ‘must hit by’ symbols at the top of the screen. It’s how they progress.
If you are not playing the UK version, where gambling rules outlaw ‘must hit by’ stuff (but not perceived progression, figure that one out), those symbols at the top of the screen will also have numbers attached to them. The number represents the number of wilds each bonus awards in the ten free games. If the number gets high enough, it will then reveal the ‘must hit by’ figure.
There is also a standard wild, though, which is blue. They are collected into a smaller pot. At random times, the pot is emptied and spews the collected wilds into a normal spin. It’s pretty cool when it does that, especially when the number has entered into double figures. I think 11 is the most I have had in any one go.
And that is essentially all you really need to know.
At a glance:
As I mentioned at the top of this review, the Regal Riches mechanic is quite unique. For that reason alone, it deserves credit.
Once you trigger one of the three bonuses, you are awarded 10 free spins. During those ten free games, you will be awarded the wilds that have been collected along the way by every player who has played it since the specific bonus you have was last triggered.
For example, say you trigger a Minor bonus when it has collected 56 wilds. Those 56 wilds will be spewed into the ten free spins. They are guaranteed. It’s like you are winning other people’s wilds, which is awesome. Even better, the wilds can double up to make multipliers.
However, the real joy of the Regal Riches slot machine is hearing yourself getting mad when you are awarded those wilds. Seriously. I know it sounds like I’ve gone mad here, but you just wait until you’re sitting in the seat.
To understand why, just do the maths. In the example we gave, you don’t want those 56 wilds spread out evenly across the 10 spins, as you won’t get many big wins from five or six wilds per spin. What you want is two or three spins that award 16 or 17 wilds, and a lot of spins that give you very few, if any.
That is what gets you sitting there, mid-bonus, shouting ‘STOP’ in a panic when you see the wilds (that you have collected and have been trying to win for ages) being awarded. All you can think about is wanting them all for the last couple of spins instead, so you know the big win is coming. Honestly, you may have to experience it to believe it.
If you get a big spin or two, by the way, the payout potential of the Regal Riches slot machine can be really good. It generally hinges on the multipliers as well. That said, it is a medium volatility game, so you’re more likely to hit steady wins frequently than massive wins, but it is possible.
Before you do anything else in Regal Riches, make sure you slide your player rewards card into the slot first. Seriously, make it a habit. With its medium volatility, this machine can be a sneaky little goldmine for earning points. You’ll usually land frequent line hits, which keeps your credits in play longer and can turn a quick session into a full-blown comp-building marathon.
And here’s the real golden rule for surviving and making the most of Las Vegas casinos and many other destinations in general: stay on your cocktail server’s good side. In most casinos, the free drinks start flowing the moment you’re rated as active. So smile, give a friendly wave, order whatever you’re in the mood for, and tip $3–$5 per drink. Even better, toss down a crisp ten early on, and you’ll be amazed how often your server swings back around.
One more pro tip for Atlantic City regulars: a lot of machines now come with built-in drink-order touchscreens that connect to your play level. Make a few bets, watch for the “Order Drinks” button to light up, and you can get a free drink delivered to you without any human interaction at all. Still tip when it does, though.
Play smart, tip well, and let the credits, comps, and cocktails keep coming.
I said at the very start that Regal Riches is a slot machine that few would list within the favourites, but most would say they play semi-regularly. It ticks a lot of boxes in terms of an unusual mechanic, medium volatility for comp-building credits churn, and a degree of unpredictability to keep every spin fresh.
I stand by that, and it’s a game I would always recommend to people. Is it frustrating? Yes. Can you rely on it to payout? No. That’s not just Regal Riches, though; it’s just slot machines in general.
What Regal Riches will do is keep you entertained and, more often than not, not make you wait too long before something fun happens. It’s definitely on the solid side of the scale rather than the spectacular, but that, for me, is a good game, given that many fail to offer either.
