Dusting down an old classic and repurposing it for a modern audience is something that we regularly see in the film and video game worlds, but not so much in the online slot space. Well, WMG has done just that, with Haunted House being one of a series of titles that have been given a lick of paint and polished up with mobile capabilities. How does this classic slot fit into the modern world of online slot gaming? Join me as I find out in this Haunted House slot review. 

Haunted House is one of the older titles in WMG’s catalog, with the game spawning several sequels and spin-offs. 

The original has been touched up for this re-release, with the graphics being updated and the slot now available for mobile play. The game has still managed to maintain some of its old-school charm, with the reels being set inside the grounds of a vampire’s castle. The symbols consist of an array of ghouls and monsters, with the game also shifting into night mode on occasion. 

If you are looking for simple, old-fashioned slot action, Haunted House is the game for you. There are five reels and three rows, with a maximum of 10 paylines available. The paylines are all dotted around the outside of the reels, and you can view them by hovering over their number. In the game, each time you place a bet, you are given two spins. 

After the first spin, some reels are held in position, and players spin again. The only instance this does not happen is if there is a five-symbol win. Players can also choose to hold other reels, though I recommend sticking with the ones the game freezes itself. 

It is worth noting that players do not have to pay twice for the spins, with your stake covering both of them. 

Like many other older WMG slots, Haunted House does not offer many bonus features. The only one on offer is simply called "The Bonus Game". This is launched when you land three or more of the Haunted House bonus symbols. In the round, players choose between three doors, each of which is hiding a prize. You will find either a blue or yellow sack inside. If it is blue, you win a prize and continue playing; if it is yellow, you lose a life. The round ends when you are out of lives. 

I started playing Haunted House in the knowledge that it was a remaster of an old-game. Looking at it through this lens, I found the gameplay to be quite simplistic and charming, with the reel-holding mechanic sparking a twinge of nostalgia for old-school fruit-machine games. 

However, I think the old-school mechanics could take some adjustment for players used to more modern slots, so I would recommend playing Haunted House for free using the demo we have provided first. Unfortunately, there is no Buy Bonus option, so you will have to wait to trigger the Bonus Game to try that out. 

I found the game to have a limited betting range, with the minimum bet being $0.25 and the maximum being $8. You would need to wager a minimum of $2 to play the game with all 10 lines active. 

Haunted House is not a game I would recommend if you are chasing big wins. The game has a very low RTP of 92.2%, with a maximum win of 2,500x your line stake. The game has been given a 4.4/5 volatility rating by WMG, suggesting high volatility. 

If you are a fan of the original Haunted House slot from WMG, then you will thoroughly enjoy the remake, with the game being polished in the graphic departments, as well as a new look menu and mobile capabilities. 

However, if you are not a fan of the original game, then you can skip Haunted House. The game is very old-fashioned, with limited winning potential, a low RTP, and a lack of bonus features. The reel-holding mechanic has some novelty, but this is not enough to sustain the game. 

If you want a better version of this game, I recommend trying 4 Haunted House or Haunted House: Rest in Paradise. I also recommend trying out the company’s Fowl Play titles, with Fowl Play Gold being one of its better outings.
