Treasure Island Resort and Casino Review for June 2026

The Prairie Island Indian Community's land sits where the Mississippi River curves through the bluffs and prairies of southeastern Minnesota, about 40 miles southeast of the Twin Cities near the historic town of Red Wing. When the tribe opened a one-room bingo hall here in 1984, they could not have imagined what it would become.

Today Treasure Island Resort and Casino is the second largest hotel in Minnesota, the largest employer in Goodhue County, a property with a marina, a 100-passenger yacht, a 16,000-seat outdoor amphitheater, an indoor water park, and a casino floor covering 150,000 square feet. The Caribbean-themed name is a little whimsical for a property on the Minnesota prairie, but once you see the scale of what the Prairie Island community has built here, the boldness of it feels entirely appropriate.

Getting There

Treasure Island sits at 5734 Sturgeon Lake Road in Welch, Minnesota, accessed via US-61 from the Twin Cities or from the south. From Minneapolis or St. Paul the drive is approximately 40 miles and takes around 45 minutes in normal traffic. The Mississippi River scenery along the approach road makes for an unusually pleasant drive for a casino trip. Free parking is available on site. The casino operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Casino Review

The 150,000-square-foot gaming floor is one of the largest in Minnesota and carries the Caribbean resort theme through its design. That includes bright colors, tropical motifs, and an atmosphere that aims for vacation energy rather than the dimly lit intensity of many casino floors. The overall effect works better than it might sound on paper, and I found the layout navigable and the space comfortable.

As with all Minnesota tribal casinos, the gaming compact restricts table games to blackjack, baccarat, bingo, and video variants - no craps or roulette in the traditional live-dealer format. The 550-seat high-stakes bingo hall is one of the most active in the region and draws a dedicated regular following.

Table Games

Treasure Island has 44 live table games covering:

The property claims the largest selection of Class II table games in Minnesota, which reflects both the breadth of its blackjack coverage and the scale of the bingo operation. A dedicated high-limit area serves players who want elevated stakes and more privacy.

2,300+ Slots

Yes Waitress Service
No Sportsbook

Poker

Treasure Island has a dedicated poker room offering cash games and tournaments. Texas Hold'Em is the primary game, with a regular schedule running throughout the week.

Slots

With over 2,200 slot machines, the floor has a broad and well-maintained selection covering penny machines through to higher denomination games. The high-limit area provides a more elevated experience for players who prefer bigger stakes. The Caribbean resort theme carries through the slots floor's design, giving the overall environment a more visually distinctive feel than many competitors.

Sportsbook

There is no retail sportsbook at Treasure Island Resort and Casino at this time.

Rewards Club

The Island Passport Club is Treasure Island's loyalty program, free to join on the casino floor. The tier-based system earns points through slot play, table games, bingo, dining, and hotel stays, redeemable for free play, dining credits, spa packages, golf rounds, and hotel accommodation. Ruby-tier members and above receive monthly free room offers, weekly drink vouchers, and buffet comps. The Parlay Lounge hosts regular Vikings game day specials with drink offers and drawings, which has become a popular social fixture for regular players.

Hotel Review

The 788-room hotel is the second largest in Minnesota and spans three towers - Eagle, Wolf, and Buffalo. Standard rooms include coffee makers, TVs, free WiFi, iron, ironing board, and hair dryers. Eagle Tower rooms are non-smoking and include some of the larger configurations; Wolf Tower rooms offer corner king options with upgraded bathrooms. Deluxe rooms feature whirlpools, walk-in showers, and flat-screen TVs. The hotel is well maintained and clean, and the room rates are generally reasonable relative to the scale and amenities on offer.

The indoor pool complex with two hot tubs is popular year-round, and The Lagoon indoor water park, with a swim-up bar and lazy river, gives the property a genuine family resort dimension. A fitness center is available for hotel guests.

Where to Eat

Treasure Island has multiple dining venues across the resort.

RestaurantCuisinePrice
Tado SteakhouseFine dining steakhouse$$$
Currents RestaurantAmerican, full-service casual$$
Mongo Bay GrillQuick casual, 24-hour$
BuffetAmerican and international spread$$

Tado Steakhouse is the standout, a fine dining steakhouse that holds up well against regional competitors and draws guests who might not otherwise visit for the gaming. Currents Restaurant handles mid-range casual dining with a full-service American menu. Mongo Bay Grill runs 24 hours and covers the quick-service end of the spectrum. The buffet runs Wednesday through Saturday with a continental breakfast option on Sundays. Nine bars and lounges are spread throughout the property, with the Parlay Lounge being the most popular social hub.

Pool and Spa

Wave Spa is a full-service salon and spa offering massages, facials, body treatments, and nail services. The Lagoon indoor water park features a lazy river, swim-up bar, and hot tubs, and operates with adults-only pool hours during certain sessions. The combination of spa and water park gives Treasure Island a resort dimension that straightforward casino hotels rarely match.

Entertainment

Entertainment is one of Treasure Island's defining strengths. The 16,000-seat Treasure Island Amphitheater is one of the largest outdoor concert venues in Minnesota, hosting major touring artists through the summer season. The 2,800-seat Island Event Center is the indoor complement, handling year-round concerts, comedy shows, and events in a more intimate climate-controlled setting.

Island Xtreme Bowl is a full bowling center within the resort, and Cyber Quest arcade provides entertainment for younger guests. Kids Quest supervised childcare is available, making the property one of the more family-conscious casino resorts in the region. The 137-slip marina is open seasonally and offers the possibility of arriving by boat, certainly one of the more unusual ways to reach a Midwest casino. Dinner and sightseeing cruises aboard the 100-passenger yacht provide a completely different way to experience the Mississippi River from the resort's doorstep. A golf course rounds out the seasonal outdoor options.

Verdict

Treasure Island Resort and Casino is a genuinely full-scale resort that offers significantly more than most regional casino properties of comparable size. The 788-room hotel, the water park, the spa, the marina, the yacht, the 16,000-seat amphitheater, and the 100-passenger cruise ship all give the property amenities that bear no resemblance to a standard casino stop. The Mississippi River setting is beautiful, the Prairie Island community's investment in their property is visible at every level, and the Caribbean theme gives the whole operation a sense of fun that a lot of competitor properties have forgotten.

The no-craps, no-roulette limitation of the Minnesota compact applies here as everywhere in the state, and the lack of a retail sportsbook is a gap that may close over time. But for a Twin Cities weekend getaway, a family resort trip, or simply a property that offers something to do beyond the casino floor, Treasure Island delivers across the board.
