Massachusetts is considered to be one of the most progressive, most educated and wealthiest states in the US. When it comes to gambling, the Bay State focuses on quality over quantity with some of the biggest casino names in the business.

The Expanded Gaming Act of 2011 divided Massachusetts state into three geographic areas – Region A is the central section, Region B is the western section and Region C is the southeast. The Act approved one full service casino in each region but as it stands only two of them have been developed with a dispute over land preventing the third. However, there is a third gaming facility in the state – a slots-only racino.

Massachusetts Land-Based Casino Operators

Although there are only three casinos in Massachusetts, they are operated by three of the most prominent and renowned casino owners in the business.

  • MGM Resorts International – Famous for their multiple Las Vegas casino resorts, MGM own and operate MGM Springfield in the west of the state
  • Wynn Resorts – High-end casino giant Wynn Resorts own Encore Boston Harbor in Massachusetts center
  • Penn Entertainment – Multi-casino operators Penn manage Plainridge Park Casino and racetrack in the south of the state

Massachusetts Casino Resorts

So, lets take a look at these three Massachusetts casino resorts in more detail:

  • MGM Springfield – The first legal casino to open in Massachusetts, MGM Springfield has been open since 2018 and covers three blocks in the city center. Combining revived historical buildings with new development, the resort has 250 guest rooms, a seasonal rooftop pool, spa, movie theater, bowling alley and a Topgolf Swing Suite. The 125,000 square foot casino has 1,500 slots, 90 live table games, a 23 table poker room, high limit gaming area and a BetMGM Sportsbook. There’s also plenty of places to dine, drink and be entertained by live music and comedy.
  • Encore Boston Harbor – Looking exactly like its sister hotels in Las Vegas, Encore Boston Harbor has that signature Wynn decadent feel to it both inside and out. Located just north of Boston, the resort has a six acre waterfront park, 670 rooms, a spa, salon and fitness center, shopping and a variety of fine-dining restaurants. The 210,000 square foot casino floor has 40-foot ceilings adorned with glass chandeliers, and offers over 2,700 slots, 185 live table games, a 24-table poker room, high limit games and Boston’s only sportsbook.
  • Plainridge Park Casino – A harness racing track with a good sized slots-only casino floor. You can enjoy over 900 slots, video poker and electronic table games and there’s an ESPN Bet Sportsbook too. There’s also an outdoor events center hosting live concerts, bars with live music and lots of casual dining options too.

More Than Gambling

Massachusetts is an incredible place to visit anytime, so make sure you check out some of the local sights and attractions while you’re in state such as:

  • Boston  – An incredible place to visit with lots of historical landmarks. Take Boston’s Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walk through 16 historic sites from the American Revolution, visit the Museum of Fine Arts, go to Boston Harbor or go on  a Boston Tea Party interactive floating museum.
  • Sports – Massachusetts is home to some iconic sports teams such as Boston Red Sox (MLB) who play at Fenway Park. Boston Celtics (NBA) and Boston Bruins (NHL) both play at TD Garden and New England Patriots (NFL) and New England Revolution (MLS) play at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Why not catch a game while you’re in town?
  • Education – Cambridge is basically the brain capital of the US and you can visit Harvard University and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Walk Harvard Yard, visit the Harvard Art Museums, and explore lively Harvard Square.
  • Cape Cod & The Islands – If you’re looking for gorgeous beaches, ferry rides, lighthouses, and bike paths, then you can’t go wrong with summer towns such as Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. As well as the beautiful scenery and relaxing vibe, you can also sample the seafood delicacies such as lobster rolls and clam chowder

Important Considerations

The minimum age to gamble in Massachusetts casinos is 21 years old. It is always advisable to bring photographic ID with you on entry.

Similar to Las Vegas casinos, the casinos in Massachusetts do serve complimentary alcohol to guests actively gambling on the casino floor. However, there is a focus on responsibility so service is usually limited to three alcoholic drinks per hour.
