2008 was a key year for gambling in Maryland when the state voted to allow casino gambling in five locations - Allegany County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Cecil County and Worcester County. The first casino, Hollywood Casino Perryville, opened two years later followed by four others.
Then, in 2012, the state voted again to allow live table games in casinos and also approved the addition of a sixth casino in Prince George’s County. Maryland, therefore, has six land-based casinos, which are managed by some of the biggest name casino operators in the US. Let’s take a look at these in more detail.

Maryland Casino Resorts
It’s fair to say that the quality of casinos in Maryland is excellent across the board, however, a few just stand out a little more for me so make sure you check them out.
- MGM National Harbour – Open since 2016, the resort cost $1.4 billion and you can see why. All the usual MGM design, quality and flair have gone into the property to make it as Vegas-like as possible. The 23-story hotel has over 300 rooms, seven restaurants, a 3000-seat entertainment theater, rooftop pool, spa and a salon. The 135,000 square foot casino includes over 2,200 slots, 165 live and electronic table games, high limit gaming areas, a BetMGM Sportsbook and an exclusive 50 table poker room.
- Live! Casino and Hotel – Boasting almost 4,000 slots, 200 live table games, dozens of electronic table games and a 50 table poker room Live! Casino is up there with the best. The AAA Four Diamond-rated hotel is close to Arundel Mills Mall and it offers over 350 rooms, 10 dining venues, live entertainment, a fitness center and a spa.
- Horseshoe Baltimore – Although this Caesars property doesn’t have a hotel, it is centrally located in Baltimore so there are plenty of nearby accommodation options. The two-story casino totals around 160,000 square feet which is bigger than Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. You can play over 1,600 slots, 97 live table games, 56 electronic table games, or play poker in the 23-table WSOP® Poker Room or place a bet at the Caesars sportsbook.
More Than Gambling
Maryland is one of the most diverse and exciting places to visit due to the range of attractions you can visit and adventures you can try. Check out some of our top ideas below.
- Outdoor Activities – Visit Western Maryland where you can do a variety of outdoor activities such as boating, fishing and even skiing and Deep Creek Lake. There’s also lots of places to hike such as Appalachian Trail in the Maryland Highlands or Swallow Falls State Park with stunning waterfalls. Patapsco Valley State Park near Baltimore is ideal for mountain biking and kayaking.
- Food Scene – Maryland is famous for its steamed blue crabs, especially in the summer. You will find them everywhere but top places include Obrycki’s in Baltimore and The Crab Claw in St. Michaels. Other local specialties include the official state dessert, Smith Island Cake, Pit beef sandwiches and Berger cookies.
- Days Out – There’s some really fun places to visit in state such as Maryland’s capital, the historic Annapolis, or visit the 3-mile boardwalk at Ocean City or enjoy water activities at Chesapeake Bay. If shopping is more your thing then try out Bethesda with its upscale shops and restaurants or Frederick for its boutiques.
- Family Fun – The National Aquarium is a great spot for all the family, as are Catoctin Wildlife Preserve & Zoo, Goddard Space Flight Center, Adventure Park and Sandy Spring and Six Flags theme park. Alternatively go catch a game at Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team.
Important Considerations
The minimum age to gamble in Maryland casinos is 21 years old. It is always advisable to bring photographic ID with you on entry.
