Some properties earn superlatives through marketing. Yaamava' Resort and Casino at San Manuel earns them through the actual accumulation of what it has built.
It’s the only AAA Five Diamond casino hotel in the United States (take that, Las Vegas!), the largest casino on the West Coast, and the second most-visited destination in all of California behind Disneyland, drawing 14 million people a year.
That’s not where those superlatives end either. Yaamava’ resort and Casino was voted the number one casino outside of Las Vegas by USA Today's readers for back-to-back years. It has a Forbes Five-Star spa, a Forbes Four-Star steakhouse, and a Forbes Four-Star hotel, all under one roof on the San Manuel Nation's reservation in Highland, in San Bernardino County, an hour east of downtown Los Angeles.
These are not incidental claims dressed up as landmarks. They are the verifiable result of a $760 million expansion that transformed a regional casino into one of the most serious resort destinations in the country.
Did you know box: The word Yaamava' means spring in the Serrano language of the San Manuel Nation, chosen as a metaphor for rebirth when the property was renamed in 2021 alongside the opening of the 17-story hotel tower. That framing was earned. What the San Manuel Nation built here would be impressive in Las Vegas. In the San Bernardino Valley, against the backdrop of the mountains that the Serrano people have called home for centuries, it is something else entirely.
Despite the Highland ZIP code the property sits entirely within San Bernardino city limits. From downtown Los Angeles the drive is around 60 to 70 minutes depending on freeway conditions, heading east on the 10 and then the 210.
Ontario International Airport is 26 miles away, making it the most practical airport for flying visitors. San Bernardino International Airport is just 5 miles from the resort. LAX is 82 miles west. The 10 and 210 freeways both provide access, and the approach through the San Bernardino Valley with the mountains ahead is a genuinely impressive setting for an arrival.
Free parking is extensive across multiple garages with sky bridge access directly into the casino and valet parking is available at the hotel entrance. A bus programme runs seven days a week from multiple locations across the greater Los Angeles and Inland Empire area, which is a significant practical convenience for guests who prefer not to drive. Rideshare pickups and dropoffs use a designated area on the fourth level of the north parking structure.
The 290,000 square foot casino floor is open 24 hours, seven days a week, and you need to be 21 or older to enter. Walking onto the floor for the first time is quite an overwhelming experience in the best sense, and I say that as a Las Vegas regular. It has more than 7,200 slot machines, over 150 live tables, and five distinct high-limit gaming rooms spread across a space that takes time to fully comprehend. It is, by every measure, the largest and most comprehensively equipped casino on the west coast.
One of the first things to note is that Yaamava' is entirely smoke-free, throughout the casino, hotel, theater, and all resort areas. There are three designated outdoor smoking sections for guests who smoke, but the indoor environment is completely clean air. For visitors who have spent years (like me) navigating the smoke-heavy floors of Las Vegas or other regional casinos, this alone changes the experience significantly.
California tribal gaming operates under certain tribal-state rules that shape what games are available. The relevant practical point for visitors is that traditional dice craps is not offered, so it has been replaced by California Craps. Additionally, the roulette wheel uses a modified format called Mystery Card Roulette rather than the ball-and-wheel version familiar from Las Vegas.
For slot players and table game players it makes no material difference to the experience, but it's worth knowing in advance rather than arriving expecting a full Vegas-identical setup.
The five high-limit rooms give the casino a VIP infrastructure that rivals anything in Las Vegas: The Vault, The Enclave (with 50-plus machines at denominations up to $500), the High Limit Slots room, the High Limit Table Games pit, and Lotus 8 Palace, a steampunk-inspired ultra-exclusive gaming salon with 185 premium machines, private bathrooms, individual lockers, and personalized concierge service.
There are just over 150 live tables that can run 24 hours and cover the full range of what's available under California's tribal gaming framework. Obviously at quieter times not all tables are operating, and while ‘150 live tables’ sounds impressive, I can’t imagine a scenario when all are open at once.
The game selection includes:
Poker runs across 38 dedicated tables covering Texas Hold'em and tournament play. Table limits in the high-limit rooms reach $25,000, and the overall range from entry-level to elite is the broadest of any casino in California.
Over 7,200 slot machines make this the most slot-dense casino in the Western United States, and the game variety is just as vast as you’d expect from such a number. Basically, if you want it, you can be pretty sure Yaamava' Casino Resort will have it.
The bigger problem can actually be navigation, but they have recognized that and organised it accordingly. The casino floor is split into distinct zones that make finding your way around manageable despite the scale.
Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages are provided to all players, and cocktail service is available throughout. Hot Drop Jackpots run continuously, with jackpots dropping every hour, every day, and before a pot reaches $250,000, adding an ongoing layer of progressive excitement to the floor.
Club Serrano is the property's loyalty programme and one of the most comprehensive in the industry. The programme spans four tiers with escalating benefits including freeplay, event invitations, exclusive tournaments, hotel offers, and access to sister properties which includes Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point. Points earned at Yaamava' transfer to both sister properties, giving the programme genuine travel range beyond a single location – as well as a foot in the door in Las Vegas.
There is also a tier match programme allowing members from over 40 different casino rewards programmes across California and Las Vegas to have their tier status matched, which is an unusual and generous policy that immediately elevates new members who already have status elsewhere.
Additionally, a Star Card is available for veterans, active military, police, and emergency service providers, providing enhanced reward benefits as a recognition of their service.
It’s basically just a really good rewards program. One of the best, actually.
The 17-story, 432-room hotel tower opened in December 2021 and immediately became the first hotel in the Inland Empire to receive an AAA Four Diamond rating. Forbes followed with a Four-Star award in the hotel's first year of operation, a timeline that reflects the calibre of what was built.
Room categories range from Standard Queen rooms up to 363 square feet, through Superior King rooms up to 530 square feet with mountain views and balcony options, to full suites up to 773 square feet with separate living areas. I went with the standard one and it was nice enough.
I might be downplaying it a bit, but what I really mean is it was what I would expect from a hotel room with this many accolades. So it was really nice, but nothing beyond what it should be.
All rooms come with high-speed WiFi, flat-screen TVs, in-room safes, premium bedding, and the elevated finishes you'd expect at a Four-Star property. Mountain-facing rooms offer views of the San Bernardino range that become spectacular at sunrise, particularly in winter when the peaks carry snow. City-facing rooms provide the opposite and equally compelling view of the valley lights at night. It’s all about what floats your boat really. Note: neither view includes any boats.
Pets are not permitted, by the way, with the exception of ADA-qualified service animals.
Yaamava' has six sit-down restaurants and seven casual dining options, alongside more than ten bars and lounges. The depth and quality of the dining programme puts it ahead of most casino resorts in the country and on par with the best in Las Vegas. But, in truth, with a property this size you need an equally staggering number of places to eat.
Here is a quick run-down.

The Pines Modern Steakhouse is the clear headline and has the awards to back it up. Named USA Today's best casino restaurant in the country for 2025, holding a Forbes Four-Star rating, a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, and World of Fine Wine's highest designation, it operates at a level that most standalone fine dining restaurants would find difficult to match.
The menu features Gold Grade New York Strip and Ribeye, imported caviar, Bucatini Fra Diavolo, Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass, house-made gelato, and a wine programme that is exceptional by any standard. This is not a casino restaurant playing at fine dining. It is a serious restaurant that happens to be inside a casino. It was, though, far too pricey for my budget, I must admit.
George Lopez's Chingon Kitchen operates as both a restaurant and a late-night entertainment venue, with live music and dancing until 2am on weekends and a dress code enforced on Friday and Saturday nights. The tacos, churros, and craft cocktail programme are excellent, and the transition from casual dinner to late-night social venue happens seamlessly.
Hong Bao Kitchen sits between the High Limit Slots and High Limit Table Games, making it the most conveniently positioned option for serious players. The Serrano Buffet at 100-plus daily dishes is one of the more ambitious buffets in Southern California and judging by the queues is an enormous crowd pleaser. Personally, I never feel I get my money’s worth from buffets as I can’t eat enough, but if you can, indulge yourself.
The pool deck sits on the third floor adjacent to the Serrano Spa and features two pools, private cabanas, the Radiance Café, and a bar. Poolside entertainment and concerts run through pool season, which is typically March to October. The setting against the mountain backdrop is one of the more visually appealing hotel pool environments I’ve been to, I must admit.
Meanwhile, the Serrano Spa is the only Forbes Five-Star spa in the Inland Empire and one of the finest spa facilities in the state. Treatments cover massages, facials, body wraps, scrubs, indulgent rituals, hair treatments, and nail care, all delivered in an environment that takes the spa experience as seriously as The Pines takes its food. The sauna, steam room, and hot tubs are included in the facility.
The Serrano Spa's Forbes Five-Star rating alongside The Pines' Four-Star and the hotel's Four-Star actually means that Yaamava' holds three Forbes Star Awards simultaneously, a combination that places it among the most decorated resort properties in the country.
Again, I balked a bit at the prices so I can’t give you any first hand opinion of the Spa, other than it seemed immensely busy and popular.
Yaamava' Theater is a 131,000 square foot venue with seating for 2,500 to 3,000 guests and it’s one of the most significant entertainment investments in Southern California.
The partnership with Live Nation signed in 2022 brought Yaamava' into the top tier of concert booking, with the property paying arena-level fees to attract artists on tour breaks. The 3,800 square foot stage is built to handle any production, and it has a sound system to match.
Acts who have performed include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Missy Elliott, and a wide range of touring headliners. With more than 90 major concerts per year the calendar is one of the most active of any casino entertainment venue in the country.
Beyond the theater, the entertainment programme extends across multiple venues on the property. bEATS is a nightclub and bar running live DJ sets and late-night events, while the Tukut Lounge hosts more intimate live music sets.
The Pool Deck also hosts seasonal outdoor concerts, and the Y Lounge on the 17th floor provides a more refined atmosphere for drinks with a view. Together these give the property a nightlife ecosystem that extends the evening well beyond the casino floor.
Yaamava' Resort and Casino at San Manuel is not just the best casino resort in California, it might actually be the best casino resort in the United States. It is definitely the best one that most people outside the Inland Empire and greater Los Angeles area have never heard of.
The combination of the AAA Five Diamond hotel, the Forbes Five-Star Serrano Spa, the Forbes Four-Star Pines Modern Steakhouse, 7,200-plus slots, 150-plus table games, a Live Nation-partnered theater bringing genuine headline acts, a comprehensive and travel-linked rewards programme, the entirely smoke-free premises, and a cultural identity rooted in the San Manuel Nation's Serrano heritage gives it a depth that most casino resorts, including many in Las Vegas, cannot match across all dimensions simultaneously.
The practical caveats are genuinely minor. California's tribal gaming framework means no traditional dice craps or ball-and-wheel roulette. Sports betting is also not available anywhere in California, so there is no sportsbook. And the San Bernardino Valley location, while easily reachable from LA, is not a destination in itself the way that Las Vegas is.
However, for anyone making the trip for the resort experience, none of that matters. For visitors approaching primarily as a day-trip gaming stop rather than a full resort stay, the property's ambitions may exceed what they came looking for.
To summarize, it would certainly assert that for anyone who has been told that the best casino resort experience outside Las Vegas is somewhere on the East Coast or in Atlantic City, spending a weekend at Yaamava' will prompt a thorough reconsideration of that position.
