Carnival Cruise Line's grand opening of Celebration Key in The Bahamas is proving a windfall for UK travel agents, just as Southampton is officially crowned Europe’s busiest cruise port. UK holidaymakers can now savour a brand new luxury Caribbean development via Carnival Cruise Line and there’s also great news for those who like to gamble en route.
For travellers with a taste for excitement, Carnival's onboard casinos present a standout attraction. Full-service casinos featuring slot machines, blackjack, poker, roulette and high-limit gaming areas are available across its fleet, and Celebration Key sailings are no exception. These gaming experiences are a key draw for many holidaymakers, and offer an attractive upsell for UK travel agents. Carnival also supports casino play with targeted rewards programmes, exclusive events, and themed cruise experiences.
President at Carnival Cruise Line Christine Duffy said that the company has has hired more than 1,200 Bahamians to work full-time at its new destination. “We’re very proud of the partnership we have with the community, making sure they benefit from the investment,” she said.
Christine Duffy has been president of Carnival Cruise Line since 2015. She leads a 29-ship fleet serving over 6 million guests annually and overseeing 51,000+ employees from 120 nations. Under her leadership, Carnival became the first U.S. cruise line to fully resume operations post-pandemic and is now in a growth phase, adding five ships and developing a new class launching between 2027 and 2033. She is spearheading the launch of Celebration Key in The Bahamas and has introduced LNG-powered Excel-class ships, including Carnival Jubilee and Mardi Gras. Known for her “people first” leadership style, Duffy previously led CLIA and Maritz Travel Company.
Grand Bahama Island, was ravaged by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. The catastrophic event forced large numbers of residents to leave their homes. Economic challenges followed but the opening of Celebration Key is a huge economic boost for the island with 7,000 guests arriving at the private destination on the 22nd of July.
With more than 400 itineraries scheduled to include the stop, and high guest demand for premium amenities, UK agents are already seeing an uptick in client interest and booking incentives.
"Celebration Key is already elevating the guest experience for us since we officially opened just a few days ago," said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. "Docking two ships simultaneously offers more guests the opportunity to enjoy this exceptional experience."
The destination is Carnival's largest investment to date at $600 million, offering over 65 acres of tropical amenities including a 1.5-mile beach, the Caribbean's largest freshwater lagoons, the world’s biggest swim-up bar, and over 30 dining and beverage venues. High-end extras like private beachfront cabanas, daybed rentals, and access to adults-only clubs offer rich opportunities for travel agents to upsell.
According to UK travel insights outlet JLT Daily Dispatch, these extras are commissionable and increasingly popular. "Early bookings are showing strong demand for Celebration Key’s premium experiences. The cabanas and exclusive club access are often the first to go," said one report. That puts UK-based agents in a strong position to benefit from bundled deals and onboard credit promotions.
Southampton Becomes Europe's Busiest Cruise Port Enhancing UK Travel Market Influence
Coinciding with this destination launch, Southampton has now surpassed Barcelona and Civitavecchia as Europe’s busiest cruise port, further cementing the UK’s influence on the global cruise market. With 20 Carnival ships across 10 U.S. homeports offering sailings to Celebration Key, UK travellers are increasingly looking to Caribbean itineraries for 2025 and beyond.
"Cruise holidays are evolving," said one UK-based cruise consultant. "Customers want more than just the ship. Celebration Key is giving them a private-resort experience that’s exclusive to Carnival guests, and they’re willing to pay more for it."
Carnival plans to welcome up to 2 million guests annually to Celebration Key by 2026 and double that by 2028, with a $100 million pier extension enabling four-ship capacity. For UK agents, that signals long-term earning potential tied to one of the cruise industry’s most ambitious destination projects.

Most of my career was spent in teaching including at one of the UK’s top private schools. I left London in 2000 and set up home in Wales raising four beautiful children. I enrolled at University where I studied Photography and film and gained a Degree and subsequently a Masters Degree. In 2014 I helped launch a new local newspaper and managed to get front and back page as well as 6 filler pages on a weekly basis. I saw that journalism was changing and was a pioneer of hyperlocal news in Wales. In 2017 I started one of the first 24/7 free independent news sites for Wales. Having taken that to a successful business model I was keen for a new challenge. Joining the company is exciting for me especially as it is a new role in Europe. I am keen to establish myself and help others to do the same.
