If you’re looking to gamble at a land-based casino in Maine, then there’s both good and bad news. The not-so-good news is that there are only two in the state, the better news is that they both offer a good range of games and a fun but intimate casino experience.

Maine has only ever legally approved two casinos in the state. Despite Maine having four federally recognized tribes, they do not have the same casino rights under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act as other state tribes. That’s because the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act subjects the tribes' lands to state law rather than federal law.

Maine Land-Based Casino Operators

Both casinos in Maine are operated by well-known casino operators.

  • Churchill Downs – Although Churchill Downs is the home of the Kentucky Derby, they are also a multi-property gaming operator who own Oxford Casino Hotel in Maine
  • Penn Entertainment – With lots of successful gaming brands including Boomtown Casinos, Hollywood Casinos and Ameristar Casinos, Penn operate Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway Bangor in Maine

Maine Casino Resorts

So, let’s take a closer look at what to expect at these two Maine Casinos.

  • Oxford Casino Hotel – Located in Oxford, Southern Maine, just a short drive from New Hampshire and Massachusetts, the Oxford Casino Hotel has just over 100 rooms. The OX Pub is the main sit-down food option, while the Oxford Express offers grab and go food. The casino floor has around 1,000 slot machines and 20 live table games offering all the usual favorites of blackjack, roulette, craps and some different poker games such as Three Card Poker and Ultimate Texas Hold’em.
  • Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway Bangor – With 148 spacious rooms, the Hollywood Casino Hotel in Bangor has a fitness center, two restaurants, live entertainment every weekend and a live harness racing track. The non-smoking casino floor has over 700 slots, 14 live table games and Maine’s only poker room with Limit & No-Limit Texas Hold'em and Omaha games every Thursday to Sunday.

More Than Gambling

Clearly Maine isn’t a big casino state and there are plenty of other things to see and do within the state, here’s just a few ideas.

  • Acadia National Park  – With dramatic landscapes, diverse ecosystems, wildlife and opportunities for adventure, Acadia National Park is a must-visit. Main attractions include Cadillac Mountain with its panoramic views which are perfect at sunrise and Jordan Pond. Don’t forget to stop at Jordan Pond House for the taste popovers.
  • Outdoor adventures – Because of Maine’s diverse landscape there are so many outdoor activities on offer including hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, white water rafting and even winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding.
  • Lobster – Maine is famous for its mouth-watering lobster dishes, you can even take a lobster boat tour to see how they are caught. You’ll see lobster on the menu at absolutely everywhere in Maine, whether its a lobster roll from a roadside shack or a whole steamed lobster in a nice restaurant.
  • Fun Days Out – There are so many places to explore in Maine depending on what type of activity you are looking for. There are some lovely beaches such as Old Orchard Beach with its classic boardwalk amusement park. There are also over 60 lighthouses to visit and Maine Wildlife Park is an ideal spot to see native animals like moose, black bears, and bald eagles up close.

Important Considerations

The minimum age to gamble in Maine casinos is 21 years old. It is always advisable to bring photographic ID with you on entry.
