Blackpool is often jokingly referred to as the Las Vegas of the UK, although that is referencing glitz rather than gambling or casino culture.

There is no doubt that there is plenty of colourful lights and its a vacation destination, but that is where the comparisons with Las Vegas end.

It still has plenty of decent casinos though, so let's have a look at what it has to offer gamblers.

Blackpool Land Based Casino Operators

Like Las Vegas, Blackpool does pride itself on glitzy entertainment, and casinos certainly fit that bill.

The bigger casino operators in Blackpool include:

  • Grosvenor: The biggest UK casino chain and they have made Blackpool one of their flagship venues.
  • Genting: Another popular chain, but one which also has a mega-resort on the Las Vegas Strip so you know they know what they're doing.

Blackpool Casino Resorts

  • Grosvenor Casino Blackpool: Near the Promenade, close to the Sandcastle Waterpark and Blackpool Pleasure Beach and boasting a relaxed yet lively vibe with a spacious gaming area and modern decor.
  • Coral Island Casino: Part of the Coral Island Amusement complex, right by the Blackpool Tower.
  • Genting Casino: Located on Queens Promenade along the seafront, making it easy to access from the main attractions of Blackpool’s North Shore.

More Than Gambling

Blackpool is perhaps the most famous vacation town in the UK. That reputation has dropped a little as international travel has become more popular, but tourism is still at the heart of its appeal.

Here are some other things you'll find in Blackpool:

  • Blackpool Tower: Inspired by the Eiffel Tower and offers stunning views across the Irish sea and Lancashire countryside.
  • Seaside Resort: One thing that Blackpool can offer that Las Vegas cannot is, Mandalay Bay aside, a beach.
  • Blackpool Pleasure Beach: Although Blackpool has an actual beach, it also has Pleasure Beach - a theme park with Britain's tallest rollercoaster, the 'Big One.'
  • Sandcastle Waterpark: Not only is the UK's tallest rollercoaster in Blackpool, but so is the country's largest indoor waterpark.
  • Nightlife and Entertainment: Blackpool is home to a large number of pubs, bars and nightclubs, many of which with cabaret entertainers.

Important Considerations

Theme Parks and Waterparks generally mean a family vacation, and Blackpool is certainly a brilliant destination to take the kids. However, bear in mind that the casinos are all 18+, so make sure you have a plan for that if you are on a family vacation.

The state of Texas has some of the strictest gambling laws in the US. Land based casinos are illegal, therefore the only casinos allowed to operate are tribal casinos on Indian reservation land.

The tribes have had to fight hard for their casinos. Even with the backing of the Indian Gaming Regulation Act in 1988, Texas legislators have still tried and succeeded to close them down several times. However, a Supreme Court ruling in 2022 went in favor of the tribes so there are three casinos in Texas to gamblers to enjoy.

Texas Land-Based Casino Operators

All three casinos in Texas are Class II gaming facilities meaning the slots look and feel like Vegas-style slots but they work off a bingo mechanic. The casinos are owned by the following tribes:

  • Kickapoo Traditional Tribe – Operate Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel in Eagle Pass, Maverick County
  • Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (Tigua Tribe) – Operate Speaking Rock Casino in El Paso
  • Alabama-Coushatta Tribe – Own the Naskila Casino in Livingstone and are planning a second casino

Texas Casino Resorts

Let’s take a look at these Texas casinos in more detail:

  • Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel – The largest Texas casino is located just a short drive from South Central Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. The resort features a 250-room hotel, three restaurants, three quick eats, three bars, and an entertainment venue. The casino offers 3,300 slots, live poker and bingo.
  • Naskila Casino – Located 90 minutes north of Houston, the Naskilla Casino has 800 slot machines and two restaurants.
  • Speaking Rock Casino – Features 200 slot machines, bingo, outdoor concert and event space, restaurant, café and bars.

More Than Gambling

Texas is huge, so the list of things to do and see is endless, whether you enjoy some cowboy culture, great food, big cities vibes or outdoor adventures. Check out some of the top places to go.

  • Big Cities – State capitol Austin, alongside Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are all jam-packed with history, culture and attractions. Austin is ideal for live music, San Antonio has The Alamo historic site, Dallas has The Sixth Floor Museum and Houston has the NASA visitor center.
  • Outdoor adventures – You name it, you can do it in Texas. Swim in natural springs at Barton Springs Pool, go kayaking and paddle boarding in Lady Bird Lake, go biking in Buffalo Bayou Park or go hiking, stargazing, and rafting on the Rio Grande at Big Bend National Park.
  • Fun Days Out – Visit Six Flags theme park, Dallas Botanical Garden, take a dolphin cruise at South Padre Island, have a day on the beach at Galveston or get the full cowboy experience at Fort Worth Stockyards with cattle drives and rodeos.
  • Cuisine – Texas has a diverse range of cuisine with regional specialties. For example it’s all about barbecue in Austin and Dallas but go to San Antonio or Houston and its all about Tex-Mex food. Interesting, West Texas has a high population of Czech people and one of the most popular foods is Kolaches, which is a small pastry filled with meat, fruit or cheese.

Important Considerations

The legal age for casino gambling in Texas is 21 years and over. It is always advisable to bring along photographic ID.
